Homested Act of 1862
This act provided free land for a low price and a railroad that connect farmers to markets. It had to have residents live on the land for 5 years before ownership was placed. This encouraged Western Migration. Page 474, 487-488 -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emanicpation Proclamation was prosed by President Abraham Lincoln ordering that slaves in rebelling lands be freed and transform the war. Page 449- 453 -
Sherman's March
General Sherman was sent by Grant to face Johnston, captured Atlanta in September and began his march to sea. He then captured Savannah on the 20th. Page 493 -
Freedmen's Bureau
Created by Congress after Civil War to help slaves transition form slavery life to freedom. It was not a successful or strong idea. Page 443, 451-453 -
13th Amendment
This amendment was ratified by Pres. Andrew Johnson. This amendment abolished slavery. Page 442 -
Klu Klux Klan
A secret group that used tactics performed by terroritsts to gain white supremacy by murdering and harrassing blacks and black sympathizers. Page 456, 457 -
The Compromise of 1877
Hayes made a Compromise with Congress before the election that held federal soldiers from their position in the South. He later became President. Page 458
