Edison's company had developed the kinetoscope. He made alot of money selling this device. He liked the idea of how only one person can see these images. -

A branch called Lumiere in France were able to do what Edison was incapable of doing. They created a device that could show motion pictures on a screen. This was called cinematographer. -
First FIlm
An employee of Thomas Edison named Edwin Porter created the first US narrative film. This film was called "The Great Train Robbery". With this film a real story line involving conflicts between different narrative sequences. -
Nickelodeon
Vauteville (small theaters) were quite popular during this time. Vaunteville started featuring short films. Vaunteville expanded into Nickelodeon. -
What is a Nickelodeon
Nickelodeons were small store front type theaters that featured films. They were accompanied by piano music and sound effects. It also came with one or two Vaudeville acts. -
John Wayne
He was one of the most popular Western Actors. He was in Rio Bravo. He had the best acceptance speech in Oscar history. -
The Early Days
Nickelodeon attracted 2,000,000 viewers each week. This number had doubled in less than 5 years. The popularity of films attracted attention of those seeing the potential of big profits. -
HQ of films
The HQ of film was on the East Coast. This changed although for two reasons. One, the east coast had bad weather. Two, they were far away from MPPA. -
The Motion PIcture Patents Company
The didnt want actors to become popular because they would want more money. The west coast although saw an advantage in developing popular stars. The audiance would pay to see them. -
Early Stars
Two stars really came to fame in this early era. They were Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplan. She was America's sweetheart and he was the comic genius. -
Charlie Chaplin
He started out working at $150 dollars a week. By the end of this year he was making more than $1million. There was more than just empty headed humor in his work. -
Pulp Fiction
Starring John Travolta. Filmed in Glendale, California. Run time 168 minutes. -

The Great Gatsby had a setting taking place in the Harlem in the 20th century. Leo Decaprio played the lead. It is 143 minutes long.
