LBJ Defeats Goldwater
Lyndon Johnson is elected in a landslide over Republican Barry Goldwater in Arizona. During the campaign, Johnson's position on Vietnam appeared to lean toward de-escalation of US involvement, and sharply contrasted the more militant views held by Goldwater. -
Marine arrive at Danang
The first American combat troops, the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, arrive in Vietnam to defend the US airfield at Danang. Scattered Vietcong gunfire is reported, but no Marines are injured. -
US agrees for the first time to help fund a study into the removal of Agent Orange, the highly toxic defoliant used by US forces, from a former US base in Danang.

President Nguyen Minh Triet makes first visit to the US by a Vietnamese head of state since the Vietnam War ended in 1975.

US and international media campaigners condemn to guilty verdicts on to Vietnamese journalists Nguyen Viet Chien and Nguyen Van Hai who had helped to expose a major corruption scandal. Nguyen Van Hai pleads guilty and is spared imprisonment.
