On the night of June 3–4, tanks and heavily armed troops advanced toward Tiananmen Square, opening fire on or crushing those who tried to block their way. In the aftermath of the crackdown, the United States instituted economic and diplomatic sanctions for a time, and many other foreign governments criticized China’s handling of the protesters. -
Fall of The Berlin Wall
The east german party announced that the citizens could pass as they pleased and that night they brought picks and hammers, chipping at it themselves. Some crossed freely into west berlin. To this day the wall is one of the most powerfull and enduring symbols of the cold war. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
Eleven soviet republics (Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) met in the Kazakh city of Alma-Ata and announced that they would no longer be part of the Soviet Union. The once mighty Soviet Union had fallen. Gorbachev was disspointed and Rrsigned on December 25. -
Creation of Israel
David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. U.S. President Harry S. Truman recognized the new nation on the same day. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had assured the Arabs in 1945 that the United States would not intervene without consulting both the Jews and the Arabs in that region.
