    Washington became the 1st President of the United States
  • The Judiciary Act of 1789

    The judiciary act put the federal court systems into place.
  • French Revolution

    The French decided to overthrow their king, King Louis XVI, to create a new form of government.
  • Hamilton's Plan

    Instead of paying the debt as states, he wanted to pay them as a nation by imposing taxes on the states.

    Tax on whiskey.
  • St. Clair in the Northwest territory

    Washington sent General Arthur St. Clair to the Northwest territory to stop fighting between American settlers and Native Americans.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Farmers in Pennsylvania protested a new tax on the grain to make whiskey. This resulted in Washington sending 13,000 state troops to crush the rebellion. (Hamilton agreed, Jefferson disagreed)
  • Lower Excise Tax

    The tax on whiskey was lowered.
  • Bill of Rights

    The first ten amendments made to the constitution. The Anti-Federalists refused to sign the Constitution without it.
  • Washington Re-elected

    George Washington was re-elected for a second term.
  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Prohibited Americans from fighting in the war.
  • British Declares War on the French

    The British declared war on the French.
  • Jay's Treaty

    The British agreed to withdraw from American soil. There was no mention of impressment or British interference with American trade.
  • The British encourage the Native Americans

    The British encouraged the Native Americans to destroy American settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Pinckney's Treaty

    Gave the Americans free navigation of the Mississippi River and the right to trade at New Orleans.
  • Treaty of Greenville

    Native American leaders agreed to surrender most of the land in what is now Ohio.

    Washington's final speech before stepping down from office.
