    Fall of Granada; Columbus makes landfall in the Caribbean

    Granada was the last Muslim kingdom in Spain. This year also involved the expulsion of the Jews, and Columbus making landfall was important because otherwise this chapter would not exist.

    Exploration and settlement in the Caribbean

    The Caribbean was only the first spot to be discovered and settled by the Spanish, soon almost all of America would be colonized.

    Cortés leads conquest of Mexico

    Mexico was colonized by the Spanish. This led to a blend of the cultures there, but was messy, especially for the natives.

    Cuzco, Peru, falls to Francisco Pizarro

    Pizarro conquered the large and influential city of Cuzco. This gave him rule over many of the native people that survived.
  • 1549

    Royal government est. in Brazil

    Brazil was a key colony. Those nations in charge of it had access to great power and wealth with control of Brazil.
  • English take Jamaica

    The English were colonizing too, they took Jamaica, which is an island in the “indies”. Jamaicans speak mainly English to this day.
  • Gold discovered in Brazil

    Gold and silver discoveries across the colonies led to inflation across Europe, which propelled massive economic expansion.

    Seven Years War

    Britain v. France, Britain got more colonies but had Massive debt, etc.
  • Brazilian capital moved to Rio de Janeiro

    Location is very important still. Rio de Janeiro is located along the coast, as most cities were in the colonies.
  • Conspiracy for independence in Minas Gerais, Brazil

    This was not the only colony that would win its independence from its mother country.
