    When there was no computer
When the written numerical systems had not yet been invented, humans counted things with all they had at their fingertips. And for larger numbers, they used branches, stones or seeds to indicate the amount. Before numbering systems were born, counting devices such as the abacus were used, and artifacts were used to count large numbers of things and were in essence the ancestors of modern computers.
