William Golding's Life

  • Birth

  • He attempted to write a novel

    He tried to write a book and was unsuccessful. Because of his failure he decided to make himself feel better by bullying his friends. He was a rude and bratty child.
  • Published his First Book

    A year before William graduated he published his first book. It was called "Poems" and, to state the obvious, contained poems. Despite his efforts, it was not even considered decent by most critics.
  • Teaching Position

    William recieved a teaching position in which he taught bratty, misbehaving boys. The boys at Bishop Wordworth's School inspired him later to write Lord of the flies.
  • He Joined the Royal Navy

    William loved teaching but he temporarily left and joined the Navy. He was a sailor for 6 years and descovered he absolutely loved it. When WWII ended, William went back to his teaching career.
  • He Wrote Lord of the Flies

    Although this novel was rejected 21 times it finally was published. Eventually a man named Peter Brook developed the novel into a movie.
  • He won a Nobel Peace Prize

    At the age of 73, William Golding won a Nobel Peace Prize. This high award was not all he recieved. A few years later, in 1988, he was knighted by the queen of England. Elizabeth II
  • Death

    He died of a heart attack at the age of 81.
