William was born
William Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. His mother, Mildred, was a strong supporter of the British suffragette movement. His father, Alec, was a schoolteacher and an ardent advocate of rationalism. -
Writing a novel
When William was just 12 years old, he attempted, unsuccessfully, to write a novel. A frustrated child, he found an outlet in bullying his peers. -
Studying
Golding began attending Brasenose College at Oxford in 1930 and spent two years studying science, in deference to his father's beliefs. -
First book
In 1934, a year before he graduated, William published his first work, a book of poetry aptly entitled Poems. The collection was largely overlooked by critics. -

Somewhere in 1935 he started teaching English and philosophy in Salisbury. Because he graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. -

He died
On June 19, 1993, he died in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, England. He was 82 years old.
