Date of Birth
Born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England to Alex and Mildred Golding. His mother fought for Womens rights and his father was a schoolteacher. He grew up next to a graveyard in a 14th century house. -
Attempted First Novel
At 12 years old, when he was attending the school his father ran, he attempted to write his first novel and was unsuccessful at it. He became frustrated and took to hurting other children. -
Primary School and College
Golding attended Primary school and then went on to college at Brasenose Oxford University. His father hoped he would become a scientist, he chose English Literature. -
Published First Work
Golding published his first work a year before he graduated from college. It was a book of poetry called "Poems" and was largely overlooked by critics. -
First Teaching Job
He took his first teaching job, teaching English and Philosophy. He taught at Bishop Wordsworth's school in Salisbury. He taught many young unruly boys, which later inspired him to write Lord of the Flies. -
Joined Navy
Golding quit his teaching job and joined the Royal Navy to fight in World War two. He spent most of the next 6 years on a boat, however at one point he went to New York and assisted Lord Cherwell at the Naval Research Establisment. -
Started Teaching again
William Golding began teaching again. And he atarted writing as well. -
Published Lord of the Flies
After getting rejected 21 times, he published his most known book, Lord of the Flies. The book is still popular today. -
Retired and had film created
Golding was retired and living out a peaceful life. Peter Brook made a movie after the book Lord of the Flies. -
Won Nobel Prize
Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. And he was knighted by Queen Elisabeth the second. -
Passed away
Golding died of a heart attack in Cornwall. He is survived by his wife and their two children.
