  • William Golding is born

    Golding is born in Cornwall, England. He lives out his childhood in a 14th century house. His mother fought for women's rights and his father was a school master.
  • Practice Makes Perfect

    At the age of 12, Golding attempts to write a novel, unsuccessfully. This causes him anger, which he lets out on other children. He later described himself as a brat.
  • College Years

    Golding attends college at Oxford University. His father wanted him to be a scientist, however, William went with English.
  • Teaching

    Golding worked in theater for a short time. Eventually, after his father, William Golding became a philosophy and literature teacher in 1935.
  • Naval Service

    Golding takes a short leave from his work, joining the navy in 1940. In this time he fought in World War II.
  • First Publishing

    In 1954, Golding finally published his first book, "Lord of the Flies." This was difficult, as it was rejected many times. However, it ended up being his most successful book.
  • Retirement & Film

    As Golding is just retiring, Peter Brooks makes a film adaptation of "Lord of the Flies." Golding lives out his life from here relatively normally.
  • Nobel Prize

    Golding is 73, and is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature. He was later knighted by Queen Elizabeth II
  • Rest in Peace

    At the elderly age of 83, Golding succumbs to a heart attack and passes on.
