    Winston's Birth and Childhood
    Churchill was born on November 30 of 1874 at Blenheim Palace. He was the eldest son of Lord Randolph Churchill. As a child he was not well behaved, nurses assigned to him could not stand this very long, and most quit the job after a few weeks. But, one nurse his parents found was very wise and understanding. Her name was Mrs. Everest, and she became good friends with Churchill.

    Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. On March 10,1876 he was able to produce intelligible speech with his laboratory assistant, Thomas A. Watson. But, it was not yet a fully functional instrument. Then, he demonstrated the telephone to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in June that year.

    In 1882, seven year old Winston Churchill attended preparatory school at St. James's School. He did not like this schools because of his behavior, he was frequently punished. Because of deteriorating health, he was removed from the school and enrolled in a smaller school in Brighton. He entered harrow at the age of twelve in 1888 despite failing the entrance exam. On September 1st, 1893 he entered The Royal Military College at Sandhurst. In 1894 he graduated.

    Lord Randolph Churchill Dies
    Around the time W. Churchill was accepted into The Royal Military Academy, his father's condition started to deteriorate rapidly. He was at the point of madness. On January 7th, 1894, Randolph Churchill's doctors had him go on a long ocean voyage to recover his health. During this time he talked to his doctor and learned about his father's condition. The trip did not help him, the doctors said he only had a few days to live, he was slipping in and out of a coma. He later died in his sleep.

    After joining the 4th Hussars, Winston Churchill was seeking some action. So he joined Spain in the war on Cuba. On November 20th, 1895 Churchill arrived in Havana Cuba. He got a job writing articles about the war for The London Daily Graphic. Their goal was to stop the Cuban rebels from even though it did not involve Britain. Churchill got a lot of public attention for this, but the majority of it was negative. Most papers were against him fighting in Cuba because it was not a British affair.

    After learning of the rebellion in Swat Valley near India's northern boarder, he wanted to get a part of the action. Since he could not get a post with the brigades, he joined as a reporter for the London Daily Telegraph. He wrote 15 letters to them during his six weeks fighting the rebellion. After he returned to his post in southern India, he wrote a book about his experiences called "The Story of the Malakand Field Force".

    In 1898 Winston Churchill found interest in a new War. He hoped that he would get to lead a group of soldiers. He was also given another job as a journalist by the London Morning Post. It happened mostly along the Nile River in which Muslim warriors wanted to separate from the British occupied Egypt and establish a homeland in Sudan. The British won, but Churchill was disgusted with General Kitchener's decision to destroy the tomb of the Mahdi and wrote reports on it. He left in Sep. 1898.

    Winston Churchill traveled to London in April 1899 to get started in politics. He wanted to run for The House of Commons in Parliament. In the borough of Oldham, he found an available seat on the conservative party ticket, and was approved to run as their candidate for the election in July. His opponents were of the Liberal party which were preferred by the city's working class individuals, so he did not have a very good chance of winning, which he didn't.

    Tensions between Transvaal and Britain continued end eventually caused war to break out in October 12, 1899. The Boers first invaded Natal. Churchill was on a mission in an armored train. Louis Botha the Boers found and fired upon the train. Churchill and others were captured and brought to Pretoria. He eventually escaped by dressing as a civilian to get passed the guards and taking a ship to Durban, the main port of Natal.

    In the late summer of 1900, Churchill returned to London. And he returned to Oldham to run for The House of Commons. Since the main topic of debate was the Boer war, he was fully supported. So on October 1, 1900 conservative party member Churchill became the Parliament member for Oldham. However, he only won by 22 votes.

    Roald Amundsen ( born on July 16, 1872 in Borges, Norway) became the first person to reach the South Pole. He brought 4 companions, 52 sled dogs, and 4 sledges on October 19th. And on December 14, 1911 he and his companions reached the South Pole.

    Langevin Developed the underwater sonar during World War I. His research was used extensively by the U.S. and France. In 1916 he could obtain echoes from a distance of 200 meters and it was active by 1917. And, in 1918 it was used in a submarine and had a working distance as deep as 1,500 meters.

    World War II began when the Nazi forces invaded Poland. The Axis powers were Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary Romania and Bulgaria. The Allies were the U.S., Britain, France, the USSR, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland South Africa and Yugoslavia. The war lasted 6 years until the Allies finally ended it on September 2, 1945. Britain declared war on September 3rd, 1939

    He became Prime Minister after World War II was declared. He replaced Neville Chamberlain after they lost the support of the house of commons. Churchill however had a lot of people supporting him. he was very optimistic and would refuse to surrender England.

    He was very sickly the last few years of his life.On January 15, Winston Churchill suffered a severe stroke, leaving him very ill. He died at the age of 90 in his home in London only nine days later and Britain mourned for weeks.
