    Marxist revolutionaries disagree over revolutionary tactics. The more radical Bolsheviks are ready to risk everything. The charismatic Vladmir Lenin becomes the leader.

    Russia faced a crisis in 1904 in their war against Japan. They weren't doing very well and the people back home were very tired of hearing about loss after loss. This caused civil unrest and would help pave the way for revolution.

    200,000 workers and families went to the Czar's Winter Palace and carried a petition for better working conditions, more personal freedom and elected national legislature. Nicholas ordered soldies to fire on the crowd. Several hundred people were killed and 1,000 injured.

    Nicholas approves creation of Duma. The leaders were moderates who wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy, like Britian. Czar dissolved the Duma after 10 weeks.

    Russia was not prepared for the costs of going into war. They were no match for the Germans. More than four million Russian soldiers were killed in one year.

    Riots flared up over shortages of bread and fuel. 200,000 workers screamed in the streets, "Down with autocracy." and "Down with war." Soldiers were told to shoot the rioters but soon sided with them. The Czar steps down.

    Lenin ordered all farmland be distributes among peasants. The Bolshevik Red Guards march to the Winter Palace and took over government offices and arrested the leaders of the provisional government. Bolshevik signed a truce with Germany to stopp all fighting and begin peace talks.

    The treaty called Brest-Litovsk was signed between the Russians and the Germans in 1918 to stop the fighting in WWI. It signed over much of Russia to the Germans. While this was happening there was a general of a civil army called Bolshevik red army called Leon Trotsky who is working for the revolution.

    During this time a civil war was happening throughout Russia, The revolutionaries or the Red Army were very strong and crushed all opposition, other countries were even sending in reinforcements but it was to no avail. 14 million Russians were thought to be killed in this movement.

    In 1921 the leader Vladmir Lenin was working to implement marxism but the people were unhappy so to restore order for a time he restored the capitalist economy which let the peasants sell their surplus crops for a profit instead of handing them over to the government. However, the government still had control over most buissinesses.

    In the deember of 1922 Vladmir lenin dies of a stroke. Joeseph Stalin is on his rise to power and isseen to be very dangerous. The country of Russia is renamed to the USSR and the communist party is born.
