    Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria . He was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip. Franz Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia and he ascended to the thrown of Austro-Hungarian. His assassination caused the Central Powers and Serbia's allies to declare war on each other, starting World War I.

    After the Archduke was assassinated, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. They thought that it was going to be a short war. Serbia did everything that Austira wanted them to do except for one thing, the Austrian government broke diplomatic relations with another country on July 25 and went ahead with military preparedness measures.

It was so bad the commanding General committed suicide. The battle is particularly notable for fast rail movements by the Germans , which let them concentrate against each of the two Russian armies in turn. Russia couldn't encode their messages so that helped too.

    On Friday, May 7 a civilian passenger liner, the Lusitania, was sunk off the coast of Ireland by a torpedo fired by a U-Boat. 128 Americans died but more than 1,200 people died all together.     America entered the war after the U.S House of Representatives endorse the declaration by a vote 373 to 50. The United States was under the command of Major General John J. Pershing. Lots of Americans just wanted to stay neutral.

    Selective Service Act
    This act gave the US president the power to draft soldiers.The Selective Service act required everyone between the ages of 21 and 30 to registers with locally lead draft boards. Our allies needed new, fresh men who could take the place of the the exhausted troops of the western front. They only had a small number of volunteers so that is why they had to make people join the military. After a few months some 10 million men across the country had registered for the military.

    He woke up and it was cold. Norval and Mattie went to the river and swam. the water was too cold to enjoy. They went to the store to get some tomatoes so they could make dinner. He stooped by the school to tell the kids bye and his kids were sad. The trip wasn't fun.

    Norvel arrived in San Antonio at about 7. He was supposed to unload and go into the mess hall. They had to ¨open down front" and get examined. The next day they got their shots.They got cots, blankets and mess kits. He ended his night in a lecture. It said that he had a good night.

    It was a cold windy day and they had drill until 9:30 AM. They had to scrub the barracks clean because they had inspection the next day. The day before they had a meeting about buying US bonds of the second liberty loan. Norvel took a $50 bond to be payed monthly $5 a month.

    This was the first major American offensive of the war. The point of the attack was to reduce a small salient made by the German Army, and to instill confidence among the French and British allies in the ability of the inexperienced American Expeditionary Force. The American attack was made by the American First Division under Major General Robert Lee Bullard. American losses were 100 dead and 1,500 wounded, out of an initial force 4,000 strong later increased to 8,000.

    Norvel was in charge of drawing clothing and so he was working day and night just to get it to the new men arriving. He stayed up 3 nights in a row just the get the new men stuff. A lot of the new men that were showing up didn't have equipment and they barley had enough clothes on to cover them.

    The Battle of Belleau Wood was the result of Chateau-Thierry, a smaller battle that lead to the battle of Belleau Wood.The battle was fought between the U.S. 2nd and 3rd Divisions along with French and British forces against an variety of German units including elements from the 237th, 10th, 197th, 87th, and 28th Divisions. The battle took place near the Marne River in France.

    When he woke up it was chilly. They ate breakfast at 8:30, but there wasn't a lot of food. The first German prisoners arrived and he thought that they looked good. He met a guy and they guy invited him to dinner, he went and it was a good dinner. While they were out of dinner he saw lots of girls but they were all the "wrong kind". He said that there was a lady laying in the bushes with a solder and her kids were standing right by them.

    They ate breakfast. Everyone had to get clipped because there was lice going around. Everyone was moving and he was stuck doing papers that were due the next day. There was a lot of bosh planes. There was always antiaircraft guns shooting. He was tired so he found a bunk bed and went to bed at 10.

    The war ended on November 11, at 11:00 in 1918. Germany signed a agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France.The First World War left 9 million soldiers dead and 21 million hurt. The war was known as the war to end all wars because it caused so much death and destruction.
