    in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Archduke Franz Ferdinand got shot by a Serbian man in a terrorist group named Gavrilo Princip. Ferdinand was going to run for the king in Austria-Hungary, a strong empire in the center of Europe. The terrorist group opposed to Austro-Hungarian government and their occupation of Serbia, nor did they want to be in the empire or pay them taxes. Then Austria-Hungary declared war to Serbia, which started WWI. Even before WWI European countres were fighting over land and power.

    After Austria-Hungary declared war to Serbia, other countries in Europe started choosing sides. One side, the Allied Powers were made up of nearly 20 countries, but the main were France, Great Britain, and Russia. The Central powers included Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The start of a war of 2 countries turned into a war world wide.

    The German attack through Belgium was part of the Sclieffen Plan. The plan was to go around the French armies, which would be massing on the French-German border and attack them. The plan was to crush the French in 42 days allowing time for the Germans to swing their armies east to face the Russians, Because of this, Great Britain declares war to Germany.

    The Russian army came into Prussia. But, the differences in railway gauge between Russia and Prussia made it difficult for the Russians to get supplies through. The Germans, used their railway system to surround the Russian Second army at Tannenberg. The ensuing battle was a heavy defeat for the Russians with thousands of men killed. Although the Germans won the battle, 13,000 men were killed.

On the first day of the Battle of The Somme, the British who were attacking the German, lost 60 thousand men killed, and a further 90 thousand men wounded. As a result, the Allies won and it was the end of the German, Russian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires,

    German forces, came with the plan of splitting the British fleet and destroying it ship by ship. However, the British admiral, Beatty, aware that the German tactics were the same as those used by Nelson at Trafalgar, sent a smaller force to lure the German's into the range of Admiral Jellicoe's main fleet. Although Beatty's idea worked, the exchange of fire was brief and the German's withdrew.

    United States attempted to remain neutral and was a proponent for the rights of neutral states. But British Passenger ship Lusitania sank , where a number of US citizens died. They got frutrated so the United States enters World War I on the side of France and Britain.

    the Russians signed an Armistice with Germany at Brest-Litovsk (Modern-day Belarus). Russia had to surrender Poland, the Ukraine and other regions.They had to pay 300 million roubles for the repatriation of Russian prisoners. This treaty marked the end to Russia in World War I.

    The fighting ended with the signing of an armistice. It required the Germans to evacuate their positions and return to Germany. After that a peace treaty was developed by the powers at Versailles, France and Germany and Austria were given the choice of accepting it or continuing the war、which they accepted.
