When the American ship's crew failed to reach the order of dropping their cargo as contraband, the German captain ordered the ship to be destructed.

Of the 1,201 drowned inlcluded women and children; 128 were Americans. America requests Germany to stop unrestricted submarine warfare and Germany agreed.

    The Zimmerman Telegram was a coded message from Zimmerman intended to be sent to the German ambassador to Mexico. The message read that if Mexico allied with Germany against the United States, Germany would offer financial aid and promised to restore its lost territories of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. President Wilson was shocked and angered.
