The killing capacity of gas was limited, with about ninety thousand fatalities from a total of 1.3 million casualties caused by gas attacks

    The first Zeppelins appeared over the English coast. The use of airships by the Germans increased. Zeppelins began attacking London. They were also used for naval look outs, to attack London and smaller ones were used for look out along the Western Front. They were only stopped when the introduction of hydroplanes shot them down.

Within 20 minutes the Lusitania had sunk, and 1,198 people were drowned. The loss of the liner and so many of its passengers, including 128 U.S. citizens. This is what got the United States into WWI

So the digged holes, for protection to stand in so they couldn't get shot.But this also lead to flooding in the trenches which caused trench foot.

Trench foot was so bad that some people had to have their feet surgically removed.

    This prevents weapon, food, and other military supplies from getting through. That resulted in Germany finding it difficult to improve foodstuff. Because of starvation, many died. Germany then unleashed a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare and sunk everything, no matter what.this resulted in the Sussex pledge which means Germany would agree to stop sinking ships but they would have to resume again if the U.S. could not persuade Britain to lift the blockade on foodstuff.

    When the US got into the war, their army was small compared to everyone else. They knew if they didn't expand it, they wouldn't have a chance in the war. So, they come up with the draft. The draft was a law that required you to register for the military when you turned the age of 18. This means if you got picked or drafted, you would have to leave your family and fight in WWI.

    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk brought the end of the war between Russia and Germany. The terms of the treaty were harsh, Russia had to surrender to Poland, Ukraine and other regions. They had to stop all Socialist propaganda at Germany and pay 300 million roubles for the Russian prisoners.

    Ted Beach states “a sub shot a torpedo at us at 8 bells while I was on guard and we changed course so fast I nearly fell down the stairs and all mess tables slide across the floor. Dropped several death bombs and got the sub.” After travailing for a while, this was first day of action that he experienced, and he was on guard at the time.

    Ted “Still rather rainy and nasty. We fired 26 rounds last night at a road and village. More guns moving in every night. even naval, and 6 inch riffles and 14 inch away back. We had a gas alarm twice last night during the first relief and i had to give in once last night. Several shells were sent over on our right but it is to windy for gas to be effective.”As they were in war fighting each other there were gases thrown at them, but the windy made it not effective.

Built our new home swiped sand bags and dug deeper, we put a roof of poles crossed and ticks sacking and an old shelter on top and dirt over that so we have a fragment proof home. We feel that we can sleep OK.” on this day they built there new home they would be living in for a while and how they made it.

    “Woke at 4:30 and fired until 7 bells and mess 8 and a fine meal. I will put that in my pack. Rads are more open now and our rations cartcam thru at 3 and water tank managed to get filled up “
    This day and the next few they had a small break,and had really good meals these days.

    Armistice day was the day that war ended everywhere. The Armistice was signed by General Weygand and General Von Gruennel at 11 a.m. . After four years of killing each other, the British and French were not going to let Germany get away with all of it. So the Armistice demands that the Germans give up all territories and hand over thousands of pieces of military hardware.

    Ted was only in the in the war for 8 months, he came in at the end of the war. Ted Beach died on November 28, a few days after Armistice was signed. He had no kids but did have a wife. He died from cancer, that they had not known about. Before he had died he lost both of his legs from prostate cancer.
