Germany broke through the Maginot line, and (using the blitzkrieg tactic) and took over France with little resistance. He broke through from belgium.

Battle of Britain begins
Germany could not successfully stage a land invasion of Great Britain (the English channel was in the way) so they took to the air. The German Luftwaffe flew over the channel and constantly bombed the city of London for over six months.

Operation barbarossa
Germany Invaded the U.S.S.R. thinking they could take over using the element of surprise. This failed, and the Germans ended up getting stuck in Stalingrad. They could proceed no further and eventually lost the war.

Germany begins going forward with operation barbarossa. They succeed initialy but weventually fail at stalingrad. their lost alliegence with Russia would turn out to lose cost them the war. -
Lend Lease Begins
The United States of America started giving guns and tanks to the allied powers. The powers they gave to could not previously afford to take part in the cash and carry act. The U.S. came out with this act for a legislative reason to give stuff away.

Bombing of Pearl Harbor
Japanese air and naval forces bombed torpedoed, and nearly obliterated the entire Pacific fleet of the U.S. Navy at pearl harbor in Hawaii. This put the U.S. at serious risk of invasion or attack from Japan. It put back the Pacific campaign by months if not years.

Germans declare war on America, America does so in return
Germany responded to the U.S. lend-lease act and the bombing of pearl harbor by declaring war on the U.S. The U.S. was dragged into war and years of conflict by this. The U.S. ended up being the power that ensured the success of the Allies.

Japanese soldiers forced American Prisoners of War to walk long distances to POW camps. Many died along the way.

The united stated had its first significant victory in the Pacific campaign at Midway, gaining valuable territory and military staging. without this land, the U.S. wouldnt have been able to employ the island hopping technique that gave them succes in the war.

Jewish people trapped in the Warsaw ghetto revolted with secret guns, guerilla attacks, and improvised weapons (Molotov cocktail, shanks, pitchforks etc.) They eventually failed, but there outcry gave hope to others in captivity.

After many months (and a Russian winter) of fighting, The German Military ran out of supplies and decided to come back to Berlin. The Russians outlasted the Germans with a combination of knowledge of the land, and knowledge of how to survive the winter.

British, French, Canadian, and American soldiers invaded the beach at Normandy, beginning the crucial taking back of France. They lost many lives but gained significant victories.

Liberation of Concentration Camps
The U.S. and allied troops made their way to Nazi death camps and freed many Jewish prisoners. These prisoners had been in death camps from anywhere to a week to several years. Many who were freed were traumatized or didn't survive trying to be rehabilitated for society. They were without homes or friends in all of Europe.

The U.S. took the island of Iwo Jima. the island contained a critical airfield that they later used to launch attacks on the Japanese mainland. This was the final U.S. victory before direct assaults were made on Japan.
