    Japan attacks Manchuria

    February 1932, the Japanese had conquered the whole of Manchuria, and set up a Japanese-controlled state called Manchukuo, run by the former Emperor of China. Thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians had been killed by the modern but ruthless Japanese army.

    Japan withdrew from the League of Nations in 1935 to pursue its own greater ambitions in the Far East. Germany withdrew for the LON because of the refusal of the Western powers to acquiesce in Germany’s demands for military parity.

    Shortly after he signed the Munich Agreement in September 1938, Adolf Hitler privately complained to members of his SS bodyguard, "That fellow Chamberlain spoiled my entrance into Prague." For Hitler, the Munich Agreement was nothing more than a worthless piece of paper. On October 21st, just three weeks after signing the document, he informed his generals that they should begin planning for "the liquidation of the remainder of Czechoslovakia."
