    Mao Zedong heads Long March
    The communist began a hazardous 6,000 miles journey called the Long March. Between 1934 and 1935, the Communists kept only a step ahead of Jiang's forces. Thousands died from hunger, cold, exposure, and battle wounds. The route passed through some of the most difficult terrain of western China. Finally, after a little more than a year, Mao and the seven or eight thousand Communist survivors settled in caves in northwestern China.

    Germany Invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
    After signing a nonagression pact, Hitler quickly moved ahead with plans to conquer Poland. His surprise attack took place at dawn on Septemer 1st. German tanks and troop trucks rumbled across the Polish border. German aircraft began a merciless bombing on Warsaw, Poland. France and Britian delcared war on Germany on September 3rd. But Poland fell some time before those nations could make any military response. Hiltler annexed the western half of Poland.

    Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in the morning. Within two hours, the Japanese had sunk or damaged 19 ships, including 8 battleships, moored in Pearl Harbor. More than 2,300 Americans were killed with over 1,100 wounded.
  • Germany Surrenders

    Germany Surrenders
    About six million soliders approached from the east. The Soviets had surrounded the capital and were pounding the city with artillery fire. When Soviet shells burst over Berline, Hitler prepared for the end in his underground headquaters. The next day he married his companian and then the next day they both commited sucide. General Eishenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich from the German military.

    August-September 1945 Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    In August 1945, during World War ll the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On Agust 6th US dropped an atomi bomb over Hiroshima. 3 days later on August 9th US dropped another atomic bomb over Nagasaki. Many died becuase of the bomb, and later even more died becuase of the radiation. The following week Japan surrendered and World War ll was over.

    United Nations formed
    The United Nations is an organization created October 24, 1945 to promote international cooperation. It was a replacement for the ineffective League of Nations. The organization was created after the World War ll to prevent another war.
