    Alfred Pugh was born in 1895. His parents were Harold and Katherine Pugh. He had five siblings. He was born is Boston MA.

    Alfred was the first boy scout of the state of MA. He was around 10 years old.

    In June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated which started controversy and threats of starting a war. Then in August WWI broke out. The war was Germany, Austria- Hungary and, the Ottoman Empire against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. Allies joined after the U.S joined in 1917.

    The four years of war there was an unexpected outcome, because of all of the machinery. Such as tanks, machine guns, and chemical weapons. By the time it ended 9 million soldiers had died and 21 million had been injured.
  • Battle of Marne

    Battle of Marne
    The first battle was The Battle of Marne, it went on from September 6-9. French and British armies invaded Germany. It made the Germans retreat back further to the Aisne River. Both of the sides dug trenches and it started a bloody war.
  • Attack on the Ottoman Empire

    Europe’s allies tried to get a victory against the Ottoman Empire. It didn’t work, after that Dardanelles, which were allies with Great Britain came up with an idea to invade the Gallipoli Peninsula in April 1915. Sadly the invasion was a complete failure. They had to retreat after 250,000 casualties.

    Alfred graduated high school and started working at The American Telegraph West Union Company. This was a year after the war started. Alfred then went and signed up for the army.

    The battle of Somme went on during July 1st - November 1st, 1916. It was also known as the Somme Offensive. It was one of the largest battles of WII. It was also the bloodiest battle in history. One the first day more than 57,000 British men died. The British attacked the north and the French attacked the south.

    The western allies weren’t happy with how the war was turning out on their part. After starting an alliance the British military had grown to 1,200,000 men and was still growing. The French had grown their troops to 2,600,000 men. Which was around 3,900,00 against 2,500,00 German soldiers.

    Alfred signed up for the war in July of 1917 with his brother at the age of 19. He went in with his brother after two years of working for the American Telegraph Company. He decided to sign up for the army after being selected to sign up.

    Towards the end of the war the German after they made an agreement with Russia they built up their army. The allied troops struggled to hold of the German troops until the American troops got there. Erich von Ludendorff launched the last attack from the German troops.

    Alfred was fighting in the Argonne battle and he was gassed with his troop. He inhaled mustard gas leaving him unconscious and with chronic laryngitis. He was then awarded disability and got to go back home. He then found a girl and they started dating and, got married.

    Alfred was awarded the highest medal The French Ambassador could give him after he and his troop were attacked with a mustard bomb. He was awarded it two weeks before the war had ended. He never understood why.

    World War One took more than 9 million lives. Civilian causalities cause it to be almost 10 million deaths. The two nations that were most affected were Germany and France. They sent 80% of their male population between the ages of 15-49 into the war.

    The treaty of Versailles was signed after the war had ended. It was a peace treaty. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed exactly 5 years after The Archduke Fraz died.
  • Alfred's death

    Alfred was 108 when he had died. He was the world's oldest wounded combat veteran in the USA.
