    Causes of The War
    One of the leading causes of the War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was killed by a Yugoslavian man named Gavrilo Princip. The Archduke's wife, Sophie Duchess of Hohenberg was also assassinated by Gavrilo Princip.

    Austria-Hungary Vs. Serbia

    The assassination of the Archduke set off a chain of events. The Austrian-Hungarian government blamed the Serbian government for the attack. At the time, Russia was very powerful and was allied with France and Great Britain. Russia and its allies supported Serbia. The Austrian-Hungarian government asked for assurance that Germany would help them if anything were to happen.

    After Austria-Hungary declares war, Russia begins full mobilization of its troops. Germany wants Russia to stop the mobilization, Russia says no, and on August 1, 1914 Germany declares war on Russia. Belgium and France also begins full mobilization.

    American allies during the war included: Great Britain, France, and Russia. These were the Central Powers that fought against the Allies.

    in Rex's scrapbook, he cuts pictures and adds captions. during the beginning of the war, he shows men dressed in uniforms and next to them are captions, that seem to be lighthearted and comedic. Since Rex Bixby wasn't on the front lines fighting he wasn't a tense and serious person, he seems to be relaxed throughout the whole war. the men had grand ball's and parties.

    in January, the first zeppelins (which is a rigid airstrip) over the coast of England. Britain's plan was to starve Germany and Austria-Hungary into submission, and Germany's citizens began to suffer from being malnourished.

    The Battle of Neuve Chapelle was the first major attack by the Britiah army. 40,000 British and Indian men gathered to attack the Germans

    Between March and May, A British ocean-liner known as the Lusitania, was sunk by Germany. Italy declared war on Germany and Austria. Italy was a neutral country but joined to reap the benefits of controlling territory along its border with Austria. The Italians and the Austrians didn't fight more than 11 battles.     With the war going into its third year, in January of 1916, the British prime minister Herbert Asquith introduces the countries first military conscription bill. a conscription bill is a bill basically forcing men of a certain age to enter the draft and start fighting in the war. In February of 1916, the start of the battle of Verdun began. It was fought between February and December, and was one of the longest and largest battles on the western front. The battle was between France and Germany.

    On July 1, 1916, the battle of Somme was between British and french empire against Germany. It was also one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day, the British had more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the battle the french and British allies lost more than 1.5 million men.
  • America Joins the Fight

    America Joins the Fight
    America joined the war in April of 1917 after Germany repeated attacks against American ships. Rex V. Bixby joined the Unites States Army in 1917 just as the war was picking up. He was in the 134th Infantry Regimen and was stationed in California and Texas. In June of 1917, the U.S. sent 14,000 troops to France for combat training. Although Rex never left the U.S. for service, he kept a scrapbook of the things he seen while stationed in Texas.

    Third Battle of Ypres
    In July, the third Battle of Ypres begins. The Battle of Ypres was fought by British and Canadian troops against the German empire. The battle took place on the western front from July to November 1917. The purpose of the battle was to capture the village of Passchendaele. The battle was won by the British-Canadian troops but the village of Passchendaele was recaptured by Germany within a week.

    The End of the War- 1918
    At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. At least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure.

    After the war there were peace conferences held by the Allies that set rules and regulations for the central powers, that lost the war. It was held in Paris. The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties that was signed at the peace conference at the end of World War I. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed on June 28,1919.

    On December 5, 1917, a treaty was signed between Germany and Russia. Russia had to surrender to Germany because the war was keeping Russia from feeding and providing land to the large population of poor people in Russia.
