Germany and the USSR invade Poland from the east and west borders. The Germans use their blitzkrieg strategy to quickly overthrow the area. -

Britain and France declare war on Germany. They don't really do anything, though. -

German troops invade France. They still use the blitzkrieg strategy to overtake the land quickly. -

Italy joins forces with Germany. This was the beginning of the Tripartite Pact. -
Lend-Lease
American president passes FDR passes the lend-lease act. This allowed U.S. allies to borrow supplies (if they shipped them themselves) and they did not have to pay the U.S. back immediately. -
USSR invasion
Germany invades the USSR. They called their plan by its code name "Barbarossa". This betrayed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact that Hitler and Stalin signed earlier. -
The USSR Strikes Back
The German army had become exhausted by this point in time. The Soviets strike with a counter-attack, ceasing German advancement further into the Soviet Union. -
Pearl Harbor
Japanese air fleets make a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, a U.S. naval base in Hawaii. The attack was close to, but never fully reached, success. -
Axis v. America
Like Japan, Hitler and Mussolini also declare war on the U.S. The U.S., then, reciprocates. -
Liberation of Paris
From August 19th to the 25th, American troops fought German armies for Paris. The Germans finally surrendered the city. -
Hitler's Suicide
Hitler commits suicide at the end of April. He died of a gunshot wound and by swallowing a cyanide capsule -
Soviets in Berlin
Soviets took back German-controlled Berlin. This showed that the German Nazi troops were weakening. -
Atomic Bombs in Japan
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. drops an new invention on Hiroshima -- the atomic bomb. Three days later, the U.S. drops a second on the city of Nagasaki. -
The End of the War as We Know It
Japanese forces surrender the war, and since Italy surrendered in 1943, were the last force of the Axis powers. This closed the war.
