WWII & The Cold War Timeline

  • Japan invades Manchuria

    The invasion of Manchuria started when the Japanese hostility towards china and indochine. The US responded to the situation by limiting the trade restrictions (embargos to gas and iron).
  • Munich Pact

    This event was made by Britain and France to agree for Hitler to take the land. Hitler broke the pact and it eventually ended the European policy of appeasement.
  • Kristallnacht

    This event is known as ¨Night of Broken Glass¨ because during that time the Nazis were vandalizing everything (Jewish homes, schools, businesses). They killed almost 100 jews, this event was very scary for the Jews.
  • Neutrality Acts of 1939

    FDR came around and wanted to use the Neutrality Act to change the American policy from isolationism to international. This led to more involved policies such as cash and carry, Destroyers for bases deal and lend leases.
  • Germany invades Poland

    This invasion led to France and Britain declaring war on Germany. Germany took the use of a strategy called ¨blitzkrieg¨while invading France and launched air raids on Britain.
  • Lend-Lease Act

    Lend-Lease Act is an act where Congress gave approval for FDR to sell, exchange lease, and lend to other governments. Roosevelt thought of this idea as ¨“necessary in the interest of the defense of the United States”.
  • Atlantic Charter & Atlantic Conference

    Changing peacetime to wartime, during the time of war. FDR and Winston Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter, which endorsed self-determination.
  • Exec Order 8022

    This was an order established by Roosevelt that prohibited racial discrimination in the national industry,
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    This attack was launched by the Japanese, they attacked was a response to the US embargo. It wounded and killed thousands of people including the sinking of the US ships. FDR made a speech the day after and was like ¨a date which will live in infamy¨.
  • Exec Order 9066

    The order that authorized the internment of Americans of Japanese descent and resident aliens from Japan
  • Battle of Midway

    The victory of this battle stopped Japan advance and put them on defense. Two Jima and Okinawa showed that the Japanese were not going to yield knowing that an invasion would be bad for them.
  • Operation Torch

    An invasion of North Africa to free the Mediterranean Sea from German and protect the oil fields that were in the middle east.
  • D-Day (Invasion of Normandy)

    It provided the long-waited western front (Soviet Union, Italy, France). Germany became engaged with the 3 fronts and diverted resources.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    This was the last offensive of Germany and starting the end of the Nazis. After the War, the American, British, and French marched west.
  • Korematsu .Vs. United States

    Korematsu was a Japanese American that refused to leave his home due to the exec of 9066. He decided to take the case to the Supreme Court and lost, the supreme court verified Japanese as constitutional.
  • Yalta Conference

    Where the big three made a plan to defeat Europe and post-war European plans
  • Nuremberg Trails

    This trail was for people who said they were following the order they were told. This trail set precedents that all individuals were responsible for their actions. This trail did not end genocide.
  • United Nations is created

    The US is who created the United Nation to help with organizing. The United Nation was created to promote international cooperation and maintain international order.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine pledged to contain communism in Europe. This doctrine was used when the US supplied military and financial aid to Greece and Turkey.
  • Marshall Plan

    Was a plan that promoted financial aid so that economic rebuilding and to put a stop to the fall of communism. This plan was proposed by Sec. of State George Marshall.
  • Israel is established

    Israel was established and the US supported the self-determination of the Jews. It also demonstrates the Geman war crime impacts and the moral of the US and the world.
  • Berlin Airlift

    The US won the 1st confrontation by using the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Airlift was brought out to supply the people in Berlin with food, water, etc.
  • US establishes NATO

    The NATO set up a military alliance that went for the Soviet Union. During this time the Soviet Union created a Warsaw Pact.
  • Soviet Union tests Atomic Bomb

    When the Soviet Union tested this atomic bomb the US took it as a threat and accelerated the development of the hydrogen bomb. When the US did that it start what you call Nuclear Arms Race, which is when they have competition on who can make the best bombs.
  • Korean Conflict (War)

    Communism in North Korea invaded South Korea, the United Nations voted to support and defend South Korea using Police Action. The Korean Conflict ended when peace negotiations ended with North Korea above the 38th parallel line and a victory from containment.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki

    President Truman dropped an atomic bomb from the need of people coming to Japan and fighting, they wanted to prevent the loss of people. The consequences of this were that the Japanese got destroyed and the Japanese surrendered.
  • Soviet Union launches Sputnik

    The space race started when the soviet union launched Sputnik. The US was in the arms race when the first man landed on the moon.
  • National Defense Education Act

    This act promoted science and math skills and increased the quality of education Also, this launch set a second round of the Red Scare.
  • Rise of The Berlin Wall (Construction Begins)

    The creation of the Berlin Wall was a symbol to separate East & West Germany during the Cold War. This wall kept the people from the Eastern bloc from running to freedom.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    They invaded Afghanistan to prop a friendly government, The US-supported Afghan resistance movement. Afghan rebelled into the Tailban.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The fall of the Berlin Wall was the end of the Cold War.
