This battle took place in Poland. Germany invaded Poland because Hitler and Stalin made a secret agreement called The Nazi-Soviet Pact, which would be to split Poland with Germany ,and The Soviet Union. This invasion officaially starts WWII, Hilter believed that the invasion would result in a quick and easy defeat, and that the prime ministers of France and Britain would ask for a peace settlement , rather than a war. Surrendered filipinos and americans were forced to march 65 miles from mariveles to san fernando. Typically took each group 5 days to compelete. They stared and beat the marchers. Survivors were taken to prisoner-of-war camps where thousands more died from disease, mistreatment and starvation. -

This was the first major battle to take place on japanese homeland. This island was a strategic location because the us need a place for fighter planes and bomber to land and take off when attacking japan. The battle went on for days an the japanese would move from one area to another in their secret tunnels. The americans would move on thinking it was safe however the jalanese would sneak in the bunker through a tunnel and attack them from behind. -

Known as operation "ice berg". It was the biggest amphibious assault in that theater. The battle resulted in victory for the allies. This proved to be the last serious defense f japenese territory efore the end of war in august. -

When president truman was discouraged by the japanese response to the potsdam conference demand for unconditional surrender. He made the decision to use the atomic bomb, to end the war in order to prevent would be a much greater loss in life were the US to invade japanese mainland. After the first bomb there was no surrender and the US dropped a second one which caused the japanese to surrrender, thinking that we had more bombs. -
