    Imperialism, militarism and allies played a big role as one of the main causes WWI began. Europe and the U.S. had strong feelings for their own country. They each wanted to prove their nation was the best. That obviously led to tension and most of all competition.
  • Enlisting Into The Marines

    Enlisting Into The Marines
    Arthur Roland Keller enlisted into the Marines to "keep himself busy." However, another reason he enlisted was because many people came to him asking why he wasn't serving. He was tired of it. He then went to Chicago to enlist and began training for 3 weeks.

    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is what caused the war. The war began between Austria and Serbia. He was an Austrian official.
  • Invasion

    Invasion
    A lot led up to the war; assassinations, mobilization, and finally invasion. It technically started in July of 1914, however, it all began on this very day when Germany invaded Belgium. You may be wondering why this occurred or maybe you were just never educated on this, which is okay because I will be telling you why and how these events occurred. Germany demanded passage through the country. They then declared war on Belgium because the Belgian Government refused. It all led up to this day.

    The U.S. joined their allies: Britain, France, and Russia. Once they were teamed together they were ready to fight WWI. Two million U.S. soldiers fought on the battlefield in France. The turning point of it all is that many Americans were not in favor of the U.S. they wanted to remain "neutral".

    "Replacement"
    It took only 3 weeks of training for Arthur, he says discipline was valuable. Every week there was a replacement because by every morning, in 1918 eight were dead. They died within 24 hours of arrival. There was not a lot of access to food, so it obviously could not have been food poisoning.
  • Germany Peace with Russia

    Germany Peace with Russia
    Germans signed a peace treaty with the new government of Russia. The aftermath of this was not what many would expect. They received large amount of land that was originally belonged to Ukraine and Poland. Many problems began with the French, British, and Americans. You may be wondering why and how the problem began. Peace on the Eastern Front allowed Germany to shift Soldiers to the Western Front. And like I said, that caused problems with the French, British, and Americans.
  • Armistice Day

    Armistice day was the day that papers were signed to end the Western Front. The war finally ended after 4 years. All nations agreed to stop fighting.
  • Arthur's Setting November 11, 1918

    Arthur's Setting November 11, 1918
    The U.S. Marines were informed to not fraternize with German soldiers. They went on with their day picking lice and finishing up their chores as Arthur stated during the interview. This all took place around 11 a.m. until dusk when they [the Germans] crossed their paths and shook hands.
  • Treaty

    Germany and Allied nations signed a Treaty to end the war. That Treaty was known as the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties. It ended the conflict between Germany and the Allied Powers. They all signed it on June 8, 1919
  • Death

    Arthur Roland Keller died in 1980. Nobody but his family knows what happened to him. More than likely it was just natural causes and died from old age.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram

    For the first time in any battle the Germans used gas as a weapon. There were large amounts yet Germans were unable to take full advantage of the French literally collapsing from this.
