John White hesitantly left with Fernandez to get more supplies.They arrived in England to find a Spanish invasion.It took England two years to defeat the Spanish and when White returned to Roanoke, he had a grave discovery.Nobody was there!It was like they disapeared into thin air!The word "CROATOAN" was carved nearby. Croatoan was a local tribe.He desperatly went to find their village when a hurricane arose which forced him to return to England. -

Walter Raleigh comes to the New World
In 1585, Queen Elizabeth allowed Raleigh to send over 100 men to Roanoke Island after two of his explorers found it to be a perfect place for a settlement.They arrived too late to harvest crops and their supplies were dwindling, they went back home a year later.Raleigh was angry about the desertion and decided to hire Simon Fernandez to transport over 100 people to start a more permanent settlement close by in Chesapeake Bay. -
Jamestown established
They established Jamestown, Virginia, on May 14, 1607 the first permanent British settlement in North America.Half of Jamestown settlers were artisans,craftsmen,soldiers, and laborers, including a tailor, a barber, and two surgens among them.Among the survivors was Captain John Smith, adventure and explorer.Despite the hardships, he kept the colony going with his solid leadership those two years, as Jamestown grew to 500 with new arrivals from England. -
House of Burgesses Established
The House of Burgesses, they were the first representative assembly in the colonies.That helped to bring order to the colonies.The first form of government that ever began in the New World was the House of Burgesses, which started in Virginia in 1619.People were encouraged to come to the "New Land" because of its success, also leading them to North Carolina. -
The Puritans arrive in the New World
They came to explore, to make money, to spread and practice their religion freely, and to live on land of their own. The Pilgrims had a long and difficult journey across the Atlantic Ocean. There was a problem with them staying; there was no form of government to follow. The men aboard the Mayflower decided that they would write a plan of government for their colony. The plan of government known as the Mayflower Comapct. -
Pilgrims settle at Plymouth Rock
We planned to settle close to Jamestown, VA since they have an established settlement for 13 years.Then the storm hit and caused our ship to get off course.We landed in Cape Cod instead.This was much farther north.We travled across Massachusetts Bay to a rocky harbor called Plymouth.There was a humungous rock that still sits there today!We decided to stay and establish our own colony. -
Oceanus Hopkins Born
It took over Two months to sail from Egland to the New World.We were lucky though.There were over a hundred of us and only one death occured.There was also one baby born on our journey.It was me!I was born on the Mayflower! My parents named me Oceanus Hopkins because we were sailing on the Mayflower and we were also on the ocean. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact, signed by forty-one English colonists on the ship Mayflower on November 11, 1620, was the first written framework of government established in what is now the United States.The compact was drafted to prevent dissent amongest Puritans who had landed at Plymouth a few days earlier.The Mayflower carried not only the Pilgrims but a few other settlers as well. -
First Thanksgiving
With the abundence of food and no longer starving, we celebrated our first Thanksgiving in our colony.Since we were a religous community, Thanksgiving was a term we used for prayer and fasting (not eating).We were gratful to be alive and for Squanto's generosity. -
Pennsylvania established
Since even the Puritans in the New England colonies didn't accept us, King Charles 11 decided in 1787 to give me land in the New World southwest of New Jersy.He owed me deceased father a loan.I thought I would call it Sylvania which means "woods" but later called it Pennsylvania.I guarunteed free and fair trial by jury, freedom from unjust imprisonments as well as freedom, religion, and elections.
