    Walter Raleigh comes to the New World
    Two of Raleigh's explorers found an island off the coast of North Carolina and thought it would be a perfect place for a settlement.The settlers arived too late in the season to plant and havest crops. Their suplies were dwindling and they went back home to England . A year later fifteen men with supplies showed up and stayed in the fort. Raleigh was angry about this and hired Simon Fernandez to transport over 100 more people to Roanoke Island.

    Raleigh established the Roanoke, now known as "The Lost Colony." Queen Elizabeth gave him seven years to establish an settlment before losing colonization rights. Roanoke was the first English colony. The first English child born in North America was born on Roanoke. Nobody knows what actually happened to the missing colonists at Roanoke Island.

    Some traditional scholars of early Jamestown history believed that London pioneers could not have been more ill-suited to settle Virginia,find gold,and seek a water route to the Orient. Recent historical and archaeological research at the site of Jamestown suggest that at least some of the gentlemen,and many of the artisans,craftsmen,and laborers who accompanied them,all made every effort to make the colony succeed.

    The House of Burgesses was the first legislature in the English colonies. There were 22 members elected by male Virginia colonists over 17 that also owned land. Six Royally appointed councillors and the Govoner were also included. The first session was cut short due to a malaria outbreak.

    Oceanus Hopkins was born on the Mayflower. His parents were Stephen and Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins. He died in 1627 at the age of seven. Oceanus had a total of nine siblings.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    It was written by the Pilgrims aboard the ship Mayflower to give themselves the authority to settle without the King of England's permission after landing too far south and not wanting to risk the dangerous voyage to their original destination near modern Long Island, NY. Forty-one men signed the compact, women were not permitted. The compact joined the Pilgrims together in a "civil body politic." The Mayflower Compact became the foundation of the Plymouth Colony's government.

    Pilgrims settle at Plymouth Rock
    For nearly six months the Pilgrims lived on the Mayflower while they built their settlement. More than half of them died the first winter. John Carver was the first Govoner. The first fort and watchtower were built on "Burial Hill' near the graves of original settlers.

    Govoner Bradford of Plymouth invited Chief Massasoit of the Wampanoag and 90 of his braves to celebrate a good harvest with 53 Pilgrims. Massasoit had helped the Pilgrims the previous year and likely prevented their starvation. The feast lasted for three days. The meal consisted of the Pilgrims' grain and vegetable harvest as well as deer, fowl and shellfish brought by the Wampanoag. They played ball games, sang, and danced.

    Puritans arrive in the New World
    The Puritans received a charter from the Massachusetts Bay Company to settle land in New England. John Winthrop led nearly a thousand Puritans to America and founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Puritans mostly came as families, unlike may other groups who were primarily young men. They wanted to base their colony on the laws of God.

    Pennsylvania founded
    The Charter of Pennsylvania was granted to William Penn by King Charles II of England to repay a debt. King Charles II specified in the charter that the name should be Pennsylvania, a combination of the Latin word "sylvania" meaning woodlands and Penn's name. William Penn was the "Absolute Proprietor" of his new colony. Penn was a Quaker and founded the colony to provide freedom to other Quakers.
