    Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders
    The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba, the "Rough Riders" was the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the volunteer cavalry.

    When the U.S. joined WWI
    On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies--Britain, France, and Russia--to fight in World War I. Under the command of Major General John J. Pershing, more than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought on battlefields in France. Many Americans were not in favor of the U.S. entering the war and wanted to remain neutral.

    Prohibition
    This was time period when it was illegal to sell and drink any type of alcoholic beverage. The main reason for this was to reduce crime, corruption, and to reduce taxes caused by raising prisoners in jail. Many wives that were married to alcoholics blamed it for the problems of their families and said it was the main reason for their families being torn apart.

    The 19th century was a period of great change and rapid industrialization. The iron and steel industry spawned new construction materials, the railroads connected the country and the discovery of oil provided a new source of fuel. The discovery of the Spindletop geyser in 1901 drove huge growth in the oil industry. Within a year, more than 1,500 oil companies had been chartered, and oil became the dominant fuel of the 20th century and an integral part of the American economy.

    19th Amendment
    Also known as woman suffrage before this woman didn't have all the same rights as men. This amendment gave women the same rights as men. A big part of this amendment and what it is mostly known for was giving women the right to vote. This was when the woman of the united states got the right to vote.

    Pearl Harbor
    President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy." On that day, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory. The bombing killed more than 2,300 Americans.

    This was during WWII the U.S. bombed two japanese cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. About 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and about 80,000 people died when the U.S. bombed Nagasaki.

    About 250,000 people followed civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on a march to Lincoln memorial also called march on Washington. This is where he gave it famous I Have a Dream speech.

  • Wright Brothers

    Wright Brothers
    Wilbur and Orville set to work trying to figure out how to design wings for flight. They observed that birds angled their wings for balance and control, and tried to emulate this, developing a concept called “wing warping.” When they added a movable rudder, the Wright brothers found they had the magic formula. On December 17, 1903, they succeeded in flying the first free, controlled flight of a power-driven, heavier than air plane.

    This is when the a terrorist group called the Al Qaeda hijacked airplanes and crashed them into the twin towers the New York City. They killed 2,996 and injured more than 6,000 others.
