    The compromise of 1850 was a series of bills passed to prevent conflict (such as the Civil War) between the slave and free states. It didn't work well long-term, but it wasn't really expected to. The five bills were originally presented as one, but very few people in the Senate were in favor of all of the bills. So the larger bill was broken up into five smaller ones-
    - California joined the U.S.A. as a free state.
