Americans were so upset by Tea Act of 1773 that they destroyed a ship-load of tea. THe colonists were upset, but they also knew going to war would cost lives. Patrick Henry gave a powerful speech that convinced many people that the time for peace was over. -

The British wanted to secretly take all the weapons from the storehouses. But certain Americans discovered British plans. Paul Revere rode all through the night waking up Americans. -

The 13 Colonies officially said "We're not British anymore!" Bye Signing the Declaration of Independence, these 56 men were committing treason. They understood that, if caught, they would most likely be killed. -

The United States create their own form of government. The thirteen States officially united under one constitution. Each state could make most decisions for their citizens, but the federal government was given power over a few important things, like an army and navy. -
Louisiana Purchase
President Thoman Jefferson authorizes the purchase of the Louisiana territory from France and almost doubles the size of the United States. Jefferson authorizes the purchase of the territory for fifteen million dollars. The territory was approximately 800,000 square miles comprising the Mississippi River Valley and most of the present-day Midwest, almost doubled the size of the United States. -

The war between Britain and America lasting for two and a half years over trade and naval restrictions. This war was fought on three different fronts: On the sea with great naval battles. On land in the northern provinces. Also in the deep south with the battle of New Orleans. The White House was burned down by the British. -

A network of secret routes and safe houses to help slaves escape to freedom in the North. -

This changes the face of commusication for the entire world and allows an information to spread more quickly and easily than ever before. -

Shortly after his election, the Confederate States secede from the Union, starting the Civil War. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina was the first state to secede, or leave, the United States. They decided to make their own country rather than be part of the USA. Within a few months, several other states including Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana would also leave the Union. -

The southern states form their own country called the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis as their president. -

Hostilities began when Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, a key fort held by Union troops in South Carolina. -

WW1 had been fought 20 years earlier. Now Europe and Japan were at war again. Japan conducted a sneak attack on Hawaii. This brought us into the war. -

We put a human on the moon!!
This took a decade of dedicated effort. There were six manned US landings between 1969 and 1972. A total of 12 individuals have stepped foot on the moon. -

For forty years we had been in a "Cold War" with the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the Berlin Wall in Germany, the Cold War came to an end. -
Osama bin Laden claimed responsibility for the 9-11 attack
America went to war in Afghanistan. This was the longest war in American history. It lasted 2001-2014. We still have troops there, we no longer consider ourselves at war. -
Two planes were crashed into the Twin Towers. 9/11
On September 11, 2001 terrorists hijacked four aircraft. Two were flown into the Twin Towers in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Passengers overpowered the hijackers in the fourth plane and crashed it into rural Pennsylvania. -

The war in Iraq lasted 2003-2011. We have troops there, but don't consider ourselves at war. -
Hurricane Katrina
This was the costliest natural disaster in US history. When the levees broke, large parts of New Orleans were submerged. It cost 125 billion dollars of damage. 1,245 people died. -

This was the most significant downturn since WWll. This recession lasted December 2007-June 2009 -
