This is an important event in the story of Anne Frank because it shows Holland's position in the war, and how much danger the Franks are in.

    Starting on May 18th, any students wishing to continue their education were forced to sign a document stating that they sympathize with the German cause. All students that refused to sign were sent to labor camps. This action demonstrates the power of Germany, and causes Anne to worry.

    North Amsterdam is heavily bombed by the allies. Anne is quite distressed by the destruction of the bombs, and all of the casualties. This event sets a somber mood in the Annex.

    The inhabitants of the Annex recieve the news that Mussolini has resigned and the King of Italy had taken over the government. Everyone in the Annex views this as great news and the even revives their hope for peace.

    In Italy the Facist party is banned, and people are fighting them in several places. This event renews the Franks' hopes that the war will end soon. They learn that people are starting to fight back and begin to hope that the war will finally end.

    The Van Daans are forced to sell Mrs. Van Daan's fur coat in order to gain more money. This is a significant event because it shows how limited their resources are becoming.

    This burglar entered the warehouse by unlocking the door. This fact causes the inhabitants of the Annex to worry that someone can enter their warehouse without their knowledge.

    Coupon people arrested
    The people that everyone in the Annex illegaly recieved their extra food coupons from were caught and arrested. This limits their food supply, and as a result, they often eat rotten vegetables for dinner. Morale was low in the Annex at this point.

    Russia advances on Germany
    Russia begins to advance on Germany, and are right by the Polish border. They have reached Pruth and are close to Odessa. This is great news for the allies, and everyone is hopeful for peace.

    The burglars enter the warehouse by cutting out a plank in the wall. The police were called, and as a result, the people in the Annex were confined to the attic for quite some time. The police also rattled the cupboard door quite a few times. This event is important to Anne because when the police were at the secret door, Anne lost hope and believed they were found out. The fact that they were still safe showed everyone in the Annex how grateful they should be that they're alive and well.

    The inhabitants of the Annex recieve news that Anti-Semitism is stirring up again. This greatly affects everyone that people have such hatred towards the Jews. This news also causes Anne to think about things from other people's point of view, giving her a new outlook on Anti-Semitism.

    The man that sells vegetables to everyone in the Annex is arrested for harboring two Jews in his home. Anne says that "It's a great blow to us, not only that those poor Jews are balancing on the edge of an abyss, but it's terrible for the man himself." This also affects the Franks since they now can't get their usual ration of potatoes.

    The Fifth Army has taken Rome, and Pas de Calais and the French coast are being heavily bombed. There is bad weather outside the Annex, and there are few vegetables left; resulting in low morale among the inhabitants of the Annex.

    The invasion of the Allies has begun, and everyone in the Annex is positive that the English will prevail. This event is extremely important to Anne, her family, and friends because it means they might be able to go out of hiding soon.

    A German officer made an attempt on Hitler's life, but was unsucessful. This is still huge news because it shows that Germans are also rebelling against Hitler, and that the war may end even sooner than anyone dares to hope.
