  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke made the first known discovery of the cell. He did this by cutting a thin piece of cork into thin slice. He then observed the slice under a microscope and saw that the cork seemed to be made of small empty boxes that he named cells. At the time, people had very little knowledge about what things are made of, let alone cells, so they believed in a process known as spontaneous generation , which is the creation of organisms from inanimate objects

    antonie van leeuwenhoek
Leeuwenhoek created a very powerful microscope for the time.He single handedly created a single lens microscope and with it he discovered bacteria. This improved upon cell theory because it provided a method for scientists to study organisms at microscopic level
  • Robert Browne

    Robert Browne
Browne discovered the nucleus of the cell, and that it played a vital part in life.Brown was doing research on methods of plant reproduction, he observed a plant under a microscope. He saw that pollen was traveling in and out of an oval in the center of the cell. He named the oval, "nucleus". Browne discovered that the cell is composed of more than one part. Which improved the population’s knowledge about cells, because they only know that cells exist, and promoted more research on the subject.
  • Matthias Jacob Schleiden

    Matthias Jacob Schleiden
Schleiden made the statement that all plants are made of cells or cell products, which later became known as the cell theory. He discovered this through extended research of plant parts under a microscope, as a botany professor. This informed the population that not just some plants are made of cells, but every plant is made of cells and cell parts
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
Schwann discovered that all animals are made up of cells. This lead to the conclusion that all organisms are made up of cells. He discovered this by extensively observing animal tissue under a microscope. This extended what Schleiden discovered, and proved that all life is made of cells.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
Virchow stated that all cells originate from preexisting cells, and not from amorphic (without genes) material. He discovered this through his studies in the feild of pathology as a possible explanation for diseases, and this informed, this was the first explnation as to why cells appear
