    United Machu people brought the fall of the Ming Dynasty.
  • Li Zicheng Attacks

    Ming Dynasty falls from a peasant revolt lead by Li Zicheng. Li Zicheng was a former Ming official, who then became the leader of the peasant revolt. When he overthrew the Ming Dynasty, he created the Shun Dynasty.
  • Battle of the Shanhai Pass

    Battle of the Shanhai Pass
    Together Wu Sangui, a Ming general in charge of the Shanhai Pass, and Prince Dorgon, the leader of the Machu State, made an alliance to avenge the former Chongzhen Emperor, who was the last Ming Emperor. They met together at the Shanhai Pass and defeated Li Zicheng and his peasant rebellion.
  • Conquest of Taiwan

    Conquest of Taiwan
    During the Kangxi rule the emperors of China conquered many, this period was known as the Golden Age. Under Kangxi rule, Qing forces conquered Taiwan, originally occupied Dutch colonists. This was the start of China’s greatest height of power since the Ming Dynasty.
  • British Attempts to Trade

    During this time the British were fond of Chinese goods such as silk and tea. The British attempted to trade with China. However, the emperor at the time, Emperor Qianlong, stated, “China had no use for European manufactured products.”
  • Trading of Opium

    Trading of Opium
    Still determined to trade with the Chinese, the British came up with many ideas. The British eventually traded with the Chinese by offering opium rather than precious metal. Since opium was a drug many Chinese became addicted which led to trade.
  • First Opium War

    The Qing rulers decided to ban opium. However, the British are unsatisfied and declare war on the Chinese. This led to the First Opium War.
  • Qing's Loss to the British

    Qing dynasty surrender to the British, because of their outdated military tactics, equipment, and firepower. The Chinese and British form a treaty, known as the Treaty of Nanjing, giving Hong Kong to the British and allowing the British to trade with China.
  • Renegotiation of the Nanjing Treaty

    Renegotiation of the Nanjing Treaty
    The British try to renegotiate the treaty, wanting more trading rights and an embassy in Beijing, but the Chinese refuse, consequently creating the Second Opium War. Once again the Chinese were defeated, and the British extended their power over Chinese trading rights and internal affairs
  • Start of the Sino - Japanese War

    Start of the Sino - Japanese War
    The Chinese and Japanese go into war for the control of Korea. The Chinese during this time have gone through a modernization of their fleets, creating the Beiyang. However, the Japanese defeats them.
  • End of the Sino - Japanese War

    China is soundly trounced in the end of the Sino - Japanese War. With the destruction of the newly modernized and advanced Beiyang Fleet, faith in the government drops.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Starting with the killing of the german ambassador, citizens united in the Eight Nation Army, and challenged Qing forces.This led to the complete distrust of the imperial system.
  • Fall of the Qing Dynasty

    Following the innate success of the WuChang Uprising, regions and provinces began to break away from the Qing Government. Thus began the belief in a new central government.
  • The Republic of China

    On this day, the fall of the Qing Dynasty is official. China is now ruled by an unstable central government.
  • Chinese Civil War

    War erupts between a fierce rivalry of the Communists and Nationalists. The Communists won, and took control of mainland China.
  • The Second Sino - Japanese War

    China goes to war with Japan for the second time. The Nationalists and Communists of China unite to defeat this enemy. The surrender of the Japanese 8 years later left China in an economically unstable state.
  • Nationalists and Communists Separate

    The Communist forces chased the Nationalists all the way to Taiwan, where they reside to this day.
  • Revolution

    Mao Tse Tung launched cultural revolution, which transformed China into the country it is today.
