    Date of Birth
    Claude Monet was born in Paris, France to parents, Louise Justine Aubree Monet and Claude Adolphe Monet. His father worked in a family shipping business and his mother took care of the family. Monet fell in love with art, but his father wanted his son to go into business. Monet soon discovered painting outdoors which became his real passion. This event is significant because Monet would then go on to become the founder of the art style called Impressionism.

  • Monet Moves to Paris

    Monet Moves to Paris
    In 1859, Monet moved to Paris to pursue his love for art. His father realized that his son was talented and he encouraged him to go to Paris. When Monet arrived, he enrolled in the Swiss Academy. Here he met Swiss painters Charles Gleyre, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Basille. This was a significant event because these men became close friends with Monet and had a great influence on his art.

  • The Woman in the Green Dress

    The Woman in the Green Dress
    This painting was done of a young 19 year old girl, dressed in a green and black stripped dress, an empire bonnet, and a fur trimmed jacket. Monet had intended to create the painting, Luncheon on the Grass, but it was taking too long and he was afraid he would not finish in time for the Salon showing, so he began a new painting. This was Monet's first major work shown to the public and he gained much respect from it.

  • The Franco-Prussian War

    The Franco-Prussian War
    The Franco-Prussian War was fought between France and Prussia. The was started by Otto Von Bismarck (the leader of Prussia), and his goal was to create a unified German Empire. Another cause of this war was Napoleon's recent success in a war between Prussia. By end of the war, over 100,000 men were captured by Prussia's army which lead them to win the war.

  • The 15th Amendment Ratified

    The 15th Amendment Ratified
    In 1870, the 15th amendment was ratified by the U.S Congress.This gave black American men the right to vote. Before the amendment was made there were many groups of African Americans, joined by men in the South, trying to elect the Republican Party. This amendment brought many changes to the southern states. Even though this did not secure equality between all races, it was a step in the right direction. Source: (15th Amendment Adopted)

    Impression Sunrise
    This painting illustrates the port of Le Harve with a beautiful sunset over the water. This was where Monet was raised as a young boy. The painting features a style of art called Impression. Impressionist art is a style in which the artist captures the object as if someone just caught a glimpse of it. It uses bright and vibrant color. This painting was very important to the art community at the time, because it was a new type of art that had not been created before.

    Woman with a Parsol
    This painting was done outdoors of Monet's wife and son standing in a garden surrounding Monet's second home in Argenteuil. This painting was one of many Impression paintings done by Monet. Many artists liked Monet's style of art and they decided to have their own art show to display their work. This painting was shown in the 2nd exhibition. This painting is important because it was one of the first everyday life paintings that was done in quick visible brush strokes.

  • Thomas Edision Intoduces Kinetophone

    Thomas Edision Intoduces Kinetophone
    On October 6, 1889 Thomas Edision created the Kinetophone. The Kinetophone is an apparatus for projecting sound and pictures, similar to how we view movies today. Edision's invention was featured in the Chicago World's Fair, where it received an extremely positive reaction. Edision's invention was just the start to watching movies on a screen instead of watching performances live.

    Monet's First Lily Pad Painting
    Soon after painting The Woman with Parsol, Monet moved to Giverny. Later he won approval to expand his pond by diverting water from the Epte River. A few years later Monet added a Japanese-style wooden bridge. Soon after that Monet started painting a large amount of water lily paintings. This event is significant beause it was just the start to Monet's incredible career in painting water lilies.

  • Houses of Parliament

    Houses of Parliament
    This painting was started when Monet decided to escape The Franco-Prussian War and move to London. This series of paintings depicted the Palace of Westminster, also called the House of Parliament. Eah day starting in February, Monet would paint a veiw of Parliament with the Thames River in the front. This painting was important because it showed art can still be beautiful without much detail, which is something Monet tried to show in all of his paintings.

  • U.S. President McKinley Assasinated

    U.S. President McKinley Assasinated
    On this day, U.S. President McKinley was shot three times by a 28-year-old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz. McKinley's bodyguards then strangled Leon Czolgosz to the ground. Later on October 29, 1901, Czolgosz was executed in an electric chair.

  • Venice by Twilight

    Venice by Twilight
    This painting was done of the San Giorgio Maggiore Island. Throughout Monet's life he did much traveling. In 1908 he left Giverny and spent 3 months in Venice. The painting overlooked the Mediterranean Sea and the famous church on the island. Monet also featured a colorful sunset behind the church. This event is important because while on his journey with his wife, Alice, Monet was able to escape his depression which led to the creation of more amazing peices of art. Source:(Venice in Twilight)
  • Lily Pad Mural

    Lily Pad Mural
    Claude Monet had been painting lily pads for many years, but this was Monet's largest and most detailed painting yet. There were nearly 250 in the series. It depicted a landscape which included a water lily pond, that Monet frequently visited. This mural is now on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This painting was very important because it showed how impressionism could be used to create a beautiful master peice of art work.

  • The Russian Revolution

    The Russian Revolution
    The Russian Revolution took place when the hard working class of Russia revolted aginst the Russian goverment. There were a series of wars that lasted over five years. The Russian Revolution ended in 1922 when the Bolsheviks beat out the experienced Russian army. Vladimir Lenin then became the dictator for the Bolshevik group and made peace with Germany.

  • Women's Right to Vote Amendment Passed

    Women's Right to Vote Amendment Passed
    On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed which gave all women the right to vote. At the time this amendment was passed, women did not share the same rights as men. This amendment opened up doors for women to have a say in the government. It took many strong women such as Susan B. Anthony, and Alice Paul to stand up for their own rights as hard working women and United States citizens.

  • Death

    Death
    Claude Monet passed away on December 5, 1926 at his home in Giverny. The months leading up to his death Monet was facing a terrible depression and he did not think he was good at anything. No one really knows the main cause of Monet's death, but it is said to be old age and depression.
