United Nations Formed
The UN was formed in order to maintain peace and security internationally as well as develop friendships among nations and promote social progress. This was to help with better standards of living and human rights. -

The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy that pledged America the support for democracies against authoritarian threats. The Truman Doctrine was created with the main goal of containing soviet geopolitical expansion during the Cold War. -
Creation of NATO
NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and other Western European nations. It was created to provide security against the Soviet Union. NATO was the first peace time alliance the United States had entered outside of the Western Hemisphere. -
The Marshall Plan
President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. Secretary of state, George Marshall proposed to the United States that they should provide economic assistance in order to restore the economic infrastructure of post-war Europe. -
Hollywood Ten
The Hollywood Ten was a group of 10 industry members that refused to testify to an anti-communist committee hearing during the second Red Scare. There was a film that was released in 1950 and it featured each of the 10 industry members making a short speech denouncing McCarthyism and the Hollywood blacklisting. -
Korean War
The Korean War was a battle between the North and South sides of Korea from 1950 to 1953. It was the first military action in the Cold War. The United States eventually joined the fight which eventually, led to a stalemate. 2.5 million people were killed in the Korean War. -
US Officials Enter the Vietnam War
President Eisenhower deployed the military assistance advisory groups to train the army in the Republic of Vietnam. This marked the start of the Americans being involved in the Vietnam War. America was on the side of Southern Vietnam. -
Space Race/Sputnik
The world's first artificial satellite was launched by the Soviets in 1957. This was the start of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. Sputnik launched into a low elliptical orbit. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was a failed military landing operation located in the Southwest region of Cuba. This landing was done by Cuban exiles who were covertly financed and directed by the United States. This mission's goal was to point fingers at Fidel Castro and his communist government to try to get a rise out of the people. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
On the night of August 12, 1961, Eastern Berlin soldiers laid 30-mile-long barbed wire fencing to divide the East and West sides of Berlin. The wall went up to keep the "fascists" out of Eastern Germany. -
Soviets Invade Afghanistan
The Afghanistan/Soviet war went on for 9 years. Insurgent groups fought against the occupying forces of the Soviet Union and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. -
Berlin Wall Goes Down
On November 9, 1989, the Germans began to take down the Berlin Wall. The wall came down partly because of a bureaucratic accident but it also fell due to officials wanting to loosen the borders to make travel easier for Germans.
