  • Turning Pages

    Turning Pages
By the time I was 13 weeks old, I began turning the pages of books. This is an example of Piaget's sensorimotor cognitive development stage. Over time after seeing my parents reading to me and turning pages, I gained an understanding of how to do so myself.
  • Giggling

When I was around 15 weeks old, I began to giggle a lot. This is an example of Erikson's psychosocial development as I learned to laugh when I was happy or when my parents were smiling.
  • First Word

    First Word
I said my first word, "mama", at 25 weeks old. This is an example of Piaget's sensorimotor cognitive development stage since I was developing the ability to speak.
  • Stranger Anxiety

When I was between 5 and 6 months old, I began to develop stranger anxiety. Whenever I was around other people I did not know, I would get very scared and hide behind one of my parents. This is an example of Erikson's psychosocial development, as infants have an issue of trust vs. mistrust.
  • Clapping

    Clapping
At 8 months old, I began clapping whenever I was proud or happy. This is an example of Kohlberg's pre-conventional morality. Even though I didn't have a sense of right or wrong at that time, I did understand when I did something right based on how happy my parents were, and I would react accordingly by clapping.
  • Storm

    Storm
When I was 6 years old, my mom and I were driving home and it began to pour. Thinking about people who could have been walking home in the rain, I looked at my mom and told her that if we passed anyone caught in the rain, we had to pick them up. Soon after, we passed a family whose car had broke down in the rain so we pulled over and gave the family a ride home. This is an example of Kohlberg's pre-conventional morality since I knew it was not right to leave others in the pouring rain.
  • Moving

    Moving
For many years, I knew I wanted to go to a tennis academy. Finally, when I was 15 years old, my parents decided that it was okay for me to go. I left home to live with another family three hours away in Maryland. This change has made me feel more independent as I rely on myself much more, and has helped me find out who I really am as a person and what I want in life. This is an example of Erikson's Identity vs. Role Confusion psychosocial development.
  • Feeding Homeless

Just a few weeks ago, at age 17, I decided to buy food from the grocery store to put together lunches for the homeless. I felt bad that I had plenty of food while they were struggling to survive. After church one Sunday I drove around and handed lunches out to the homeless I saw. This is an example of Kohlberg's conventional morality since I recognized a need of others and tried to help it.
  • Lawyer

If in the next 10 years I went on to become a lawyer, this would be part of Piaget's formal operational cognitive development stage. Here I would have to think abstractly of right vs. wrong, determining which person or case deserves justice. This could also be an example of Kohlberg's post-conventional morality as I gain an understanding of when breaking the law is acceptable.
