  • Battle of Stalingrad

    Stalingrad was a major industrial center in the Volga River. The Germans attacked Stalingrad in August of 1942 and it included some of the bloodiest fighting in the history of warfare because the Soviets refused to let Stalingrad fall. The Germans failed to take the city and the Soviets counterattacked thus trapping 250,000 Axis soldiers. The surviving Axis troops were forced to surrender in early 1943.     The battle coincided with the Allied invasion of French North Africa in Operation Torch, which started 8 November. The operation is also considered to be the end of the 200 days of dread of the Yishuv in the British Man.
