Events Leading to the Revolutionary War

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The British government issued a law called the Proclamation of 1763. The Proclamation banned the English Colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. This law established a Proclamation Line, which the English Colonists were not to cross because the British did not want to interfere with the Native Americans anymore. The Colonists reacted with irritation and anger to this proclamation. However, the law did not succeed because most of the Colonists had already began to move west.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was a law passed by the British Parliament on the colonists.The act halved the tax on sugar and molasses used for rum. This was in order for the colonists to pay the lower tax instead of risking an arrest by smuggling foreign-made sugar and molasses. However, most of the taxes were paid by the wealthy merchants. The colonists reacted with anger and annoyance on the Sugar Act because they did not want to be taxed on sugar and molasses. Many Colonists were in economic depression.

    The Stamp act was an Act by the British Parliament that required every colonists, wealthy and poor to pay a direct tax on every piece of printed paper they used. They had to purchase a special stamped paper for all of their legal documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and playing cards they owned.The British Parliament taxed the colonists because they were in need of money. The colonists were frustrated and upset with the British for taxing them without their agreement.

    Repeal of Stamp Act
    After a year of passing the Stamp Act in 1765, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act because of colonists protesting and the widespread of boycott. However on the same day, Parliament passed the Declatory Act.This act accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act. The Declatory Act allowed Parliament to govern and tax the colonies. Also, allowed the British government to have total legislative power over the colonies. The colonists reacted with a celebration of great victory in repeal of the Stamp Act.

    The Boston Massacre is an example of Colonial Propaganda.It began with a violent confrontation between the British Soldiers and the American Colonists caused by competition over jobs.The Boston Massacre began with a street fight as the colonists threw snowballs and insulted the British Soldiers.As a result, the soldiers fired on the crowd and 5 colonists had died that day.The Colonists were extremely outraged at what they saw and presented it as a British Attack on powerless citizens.

    Early in 1773, Parliament issued the Tea Act to help struggling English Tea Companies.However later on,The Boston Tea Party which was known as an incident in which American Colonists disguised as "Indians"& dumped over 18,000 pounds of East India Company's Tea were thrown from ships into the Boston Harbor to protest the tax on tea.Many Colonists reacted with mixed feelings. However, the colonists who wanted independence thought the act of throwing the tea in the water was a good thing.

    The Intolerable Acts was a series of laws passed by the British Parliament in response to the Boston Tea Party.The Act shut down Boston Harbor because of the colonists throwing large amount of tea in the water & refused to pay for the damage they did.Another law was the Quartering Act,allowed Britain's to house soldiers in vacant private homes.Colonists reacted with anger because they didn't want to pay for their damages so the colonists quickly assembled the1st Continental Congress.

    The Battle of Trenton took place in Trenton, New Jersey.The battle was fought between the Americans against the Hessians and British Troops after the American lost of the battle in New York.Hessians were Germans hired by the British.It was a small battle but was very crucial during the American Revolutionary War after General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River.The colonists reacted with happiness because they were successful &won against the Hessians and British Troops.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    The Battle of Yorktown also known as the Siege of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. The battle was between the Americans joining forces with the French to fight the British Troops. George Washington led the continental army and Charles Cornwallis led the British army during this battle. The Americans won the battle because Cornwallis surrendered in the end. Colonists reacted with joy because of the win of the Americans and it was the last major battle.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris was a treaty signed by the delegates which allowed the United States independence. It was signed in Paris by representatives of King George III of Great Britain &representatives of the U.S.The United Stated now stretches from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River and from Canada to the Florida Border. This is an important treaty because it realizes independence between the 13th colonies.The colonists reacted with happiness because of finally gaining their own independence.
