    Karl Drais invents the dandy horse, a 2 wheeled replacement to horses, who where being slaughtered for food due to crop failure. the design was revolutionary but failed because the public had not yet learned to balance on such a machine.

    previously made of wood, a new line a bicycles, referred to as "bone shakers", utilized metals to increase durability and life. although the new design added petals, the stiffness made for a very uncomfortable ride.

    Riding High
    The Highwheeler, invented by Eugene Meyer for adrenaline junkies and young men, had a large wheel in the front that made it faster than any bike made previously. The bike was also more comfortable, as the front wheels spokes absorbed most of the shock. The bike was dangerous though, as it was much taller and made much sharper turns.
