France declares war on Great Britain to help the American colonies.(there is no specific date) This is important because it would drain a lot of France's money fighting Great Britain and helping the colonies at the same time. -

Calling of the estate general
The Parliament du Paris would not register the tax on property of all three estates. This was one of the reasons why the FR started they were making the third estate pay all of the property tax and the third estate was fed up and spoke out to the parliament and got denied which made the third estate pledge in that tennis court. -
The People Storm the Bastille
This was the second public opposition against the king and the first violent one. The angry mobs swarmed it for the weapons inside and because of the statuses an icon of the monarchs tyranny. This was an important event because it was the first act of violence. -

This was the beginning of the secularization of France. The new Civil Constitution of the Clergy now forces the first estate to swear allegiance to the king not the religion and to turn over all there land to the estate. This was a major event because it put the government above the church and religion. -

The King and his family try to flee the country and go to Austria but fail and get put on house arrest. This was important because he wanted to leave his country and escape debt. -

Condemned to death on charges of "conspiracy against liberty". This was important because soon after the reign of terror started. -
Reign of Terror
The most violent period during the FR begins. A huge political battle between the Jacobins and the Girondins. This was important because thousands of people were sentenced to death and thousands were killed in surges of violence during this period. -

The directory was a body of 5 Directors that held executive power. Eventually they were overthrown by Napoleon and the government became the consulate and Napoleon became the first consulate. -

Napoleon overthrew the directory and replaced it with the consulate. Later Napoleon became the first consulate and a dictator. This was important because he helped the people but also messed up a lot in battle. -

The consulate stood as the government of France from the fall of the directory to the start of the Napoleonic empire, Napoleon became a dictator. -
Napoleons Code
Napoleon wanted to reform the French legal system according to the French Revolution's ideas because the old laws were not what the people wanted. This was important because the people started the Revolution because of those old laws. -
Napoleon crowned himself emperor
Usually the pope crowns the king and Napoleon made a big statement doing this. Napoleon crowned himself to show that he is better and more powerful the church and the pope.
