  • Meeting of the Estates General

    Voting at the time was one vote for each estate. This put the 3rd estate at a big disadvantage because the 1st and 2nd estates could just vote together to stop the 3rd estate. Representatives from the 3rd estate tried to get the vote by population, but the 1st and 2nd estate wanted to keep their power and wouldn't agree on this.

    On July 14, 1789 people of Paris stole weapons from the Bastille. Parisians formed their own government and called it the Commune. Small groups or factions all competed to control the city of Paris. After this uprising, many more uprisings started happening.

    The Declaration of Rights in France was when they made laws about what rights every person has. Men had the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, guaranteed property rights, the right to create a law, and the right to a free trial. Women also gained rights during this time, but not so much for their good.

    The March on Versailles was a large number of women and some men in a crowd at Versailles demanding bread for their families. The reason that this happened was because the price of bread was so high and there was so little of it. The crowd grew and grew, once it was a crowd of thousands they broke in and stole weapons from the Palace of Versailles.

    The Reign of Terror

    The Reign of Terror was a time when civil war was spreading. Even though the military was very successful, the convention continued to face issues inside France. The Jacobin political party started to dominate the government and politics. About 15,000 people were killed by guillotine because of treason and similar reasons.
  • The Rise of Napoleon and Creation of an Empire

    With all of the problems going on with the revolution, France was in desperate need of a good leader. So Napoleon easily rose to the top. He led France in battles and tried to get them to obtain more power. He also overthrew the French Directory.

    After becoming emperor of France, a lot of conflicts rose with France and other countries. Things like the Peninsular war, invasions of Russia,and the continental system made France fall apart by taking their resources as well as many lives
