Exploration of Africa
The Portuguese wanted to spread Christianity throughout Africa and eliminate islam in Africa. Prince Henry sent a ship to Africa to explore and find good trading routes. The Porteguese found and claimed maany islands along the way, which would become important trading places to the Americas. -

Age of Exploration
The motivation for exploration began with people wanting to become rich, so they wanted to find a new route to India to find gold, spices, and land. Later on, the motivation was scienctifically and geographically related, because people didn't know where the map ended beyond Africa. Some famous explorers in this time period include Christopher Columbus and Vespucci. -

Osei Tutu established the kingdom of Asante by gaining control of Kumasi and uniting the surrounding neighborhoods. The Asante people were very close because of their spiritual bonds. OSei Tutu had a goverment that was based off gold mining and slaves trades, which they traded with the Europeans in return for firearms. -

The industrial revolution provided lots of jobs for people, since there were now factories; it also helped goods become easier to make. During the industrial revolution, technology was improved, knowledge and education spread, and people's social life changed. -
Arkwrights Water Frame
Richard Arkwright made a machine that worked like a clock, but spun cotton fibers to speed up the process of making a large quantity of clothes. Arkwright created the factory and one of the first innovations that led up to the Industrial Revolution. -
Origin of Species
Charles Darwin published a book called "On the Origin of Species", this book determined that all forms of life had evolved millions of years ago. Darwin claimed the process of evolution took a long time because of natural selection, or survival of the fittest. -
Social Darwinism/ Survival of the Fittest
The idea of survival of the fittest became an economic competition by Social Darwinists. This issue promoted racism because white people and Europeans now thought they were supierior to others. -

For a long period of time the borders of Africa had been drawn by the Europeans. Overtime other nations, including Italy, wanted to be included in the decision of who owned what land and where the boundaries were drawn. The partition took place both on paper and in battles.
