Columbia Institution
Columbia Institution was the first college in the world for students with disabilities. This school was for the deaf and the blind to have an education. Congress allowed students with disabilities to obtain a college degree at this institution. -
Beattie vs. Board of Education
The Wisconsin Supreme Court allowed a student to be expelled from a school based on a disability. The student had a condition where they couldn't stop drooling and had facial abnormalities. Teachers found the student to be distracting and kept disrupting the classroom's environment. The teacher called the student nauseating and thought the student took too much time away from the class. -
Council for Exceptional Children
The council for exceptional children was actually the first advocacy group for children with disabilities. This was also the largest group that wanted children with disabilities to receive FAPE. They focus on improving special education and find better ways to care and teach for these students.

Brown v. Board of Education
This is one of the most famous court cases. This was when the court decided that racially segregating students in public schools was unconstitutional. This meant there could not be a black school, and a white school. This case is famous for the quote, "Separate but equal". This didn't mean segregation wasn't allowed and really students were not completely equal. -
Section 504
This is the first federal civil rights law that protects the rights of people with disabilities. This could be suited for young children and even adults would fall under this law. This act was also called the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This law protected people from disability discrimination. This allows these people to participate and benefit from programs, activities, and services without being discriminated against. -
Handicapped Children's Protection Act
This is an act that was signed by Ronald Regan. This law gave parents of children who had disabilities to have more say into what goes into their IEP. An IEP is an Individual Education Plan tailored for each student with disabilities. Parents were able to get more insight into what was happening with their children and what services and programs they need. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
This is a civil rights law that prohibits the discrimination against people who suffer from a disability. This discrimination could be in the person's job, public life, schooling, and transportation. All public places must allow for people with disabilities to have the same opportunities and rights. -
Individuals with Disabilities Act
This act is a legislation that allows students with a disability to have a free and appropriate public education. This act allows these students to have their unique needs met and help them in the future to independently live and work. It used to be called the All handicapped Children Act. Students within this act must be taught in the least restrictive environment. -
No Child Left behind Act
This act is a part of the Disabilities Education Act. This act is to make sure students are achieving properly and are caught up to the current requirements of teaching in the 21st century. This law was essentially the Elementary and Secondary Education act. it added new requirements that state and school districts needed to follow.

IDEA reauthorized
This is when changes were made to the IDEA Act that's main focus was to work on improving the education of children with disabilities. This would be by identifying children with disabilities before they enter school. This way they can get the services they need when they need them. Then IEP's can be developed to make sure the student is getting their specific needs and services taken care of.
