    When Ohio outlawed slavery in 1802 it was a sign to slaves that Ohio was a safe place to be. It also showed that they could come here to make a new life for themselves. Many slaves moved North towards Canada through the Underground Railroad, but they also would stop and live in Ohio because they could be free.

    Ohio came out of the Northwest territory. It got its name from the Ohio River. Ohio was admitted as the 17th state of the United States.

    The Underground Railroad was a route for slaves escaping slavery. The route consisted of multiple houses and hide outs. These home owners housed the slaves along there way to the north. One leader of the Underground Railroad was Harriet Tubman.
