    Opium Wars
    The Chinese wanted to try to stop the smuggling of opium from the British, so they went to war over it. The British easily defeated the Chinese and this led to the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 which granted the British money and Hong Kong.
  • Suez Canal built

    Suez Canal built
    The ruler of Egypt Isma'il supported the construction of the Suez Canal that connected the Red Sea to the Mediterranean in order to modernize Egypt. The British ended up taking it over because Egypt could not pay interest and debts. They wanted a quicker way to India for trade.
  • David Livingstone found

    David Livingstone went to Africa as a Christiand missionary t pread the Christian faith. He was the only white man there and on November 10th, 1871, he was found by Stanley who was searching for him. This event allowed for the exploration of Afica.
  • Queen Victoria crowned Empress of India

    Queen Victoria crowned Empress of India
    The British already had the British East India Company and they had lots of economic and trade control in India without government control. The crowning of Queen Victoria as Empress of India gave Britain full control over India.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    The United States created the Open Door Policy to open Chinese trade to all nations. This also allowed China to be more modernized within the trade world and have more contact with foreigners.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    Roosevelt Corollary
    This was an extension to the Monroe Doctrine made by President Roosevelt. It gave the United States the right to be an "international police power" in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Panama Canal built

    Panama Canal built
    The Panama Canal was finally built after Roosevelt encouraged an uprising which led to Panama's independence from Colombia. Boats could now travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean without having to go to the tip of South America.
