Lisa's Jewish Journey Timeline

  • Camp Judaea

Attended Camp Judaea in North Carolina from 1997-2001. My camping years had a huge influence on my Jewish and Zionist values throughout my childhood.
  • My Bat Mitzvah

  • Began high school at the New Atlanta Jewish Community High School/ Weber School

Began high school at the New Atlanta Jewish Community High School/ Weber School
I view my high school experience as a very formative time in my Jewish growth and my Jewish identity. I attended a pluralistic Jewish high school and I think of this time in my life as the first time that I was encouraged to think for myself and identify where I stood Jewishly and as a citizen of the world.
  • Rabin Memorial Tekes

When I was in high school, I was the president of the Israel Club. One of the responsibilites I had in this role was to plan the Tekes to commemorate the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin. Planning this event for my high school classmates was my first experience with Jewish programming and is part of what inspired me to becone a Jewish educator.
  • Camp Judaea Counselor

Worked at camp. Loved planning peulot and haning out with kids.
  • Young Judaea Year Course

    Young Judaea Year Course
I always view this year that I lived in Israel as the best year of my life. Living in Israel was a totally different experience than anything I had ever had on any of my trips, and this is where I learned that you don't really know a place until you've lived there. This year definitely changed my relationship with Israel in a way that I did not expect.
  • Began at University of Maryland (undergrad)

In college, I majored in Jewish Studies. However, this is not how I think of college in terms of my Jewish growth. While I did expand my Jewish knowledge, what really strikes me about this period of my life was the growth in my relgious practice. Although I grew up keeping Shabbat, it was not until college that I truely understood the beauty, personal meaning, and value of Shabbat in my life. Being surrounded by a community that was more observant than I was, I came to appreciate it differently.
  • Grandparents made Aliyah

Israel became even more of a second home to me once my grandparents moved to Jerusalem, after over 70 years in Knoxville, Tennessee.
  • Camp Young Judaea Midwest Staff

Counselor again and Israeli Dance specialist.
  • Graduated UMD

    Graduated UMD
College Graduation! What does one do with a degree in "Jewish Studies" was I question I was often asked and rarely had a great answer for.
  • Began working at JPDS

    Began working at JPDS
When I began working at the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation's Capital, I had no idea what would be in store for me. I can't describe the growth and change I have gone through in my time there, mainly professionally but also Jewishly, in a couple of short sentences.
  • Ivriyon at JTS

I spent the summer at JTS doing a Hebrew immersion program for teachers called Ivriyon. This was when I started thinking about the idea of grad school in Jewish Education,
  • Began MJEd at Hebrew College

    Began MJEd at Hebrew College
I finally took the plunge and realized how many opportunities a Masters in Jewish Education would provide for me. Learning how to learn online is something that took some adjustment but I am happy to be in my second year instead of my first year!
  • Rosh Omanut at Ramah Day Camp of Greater Washington

Rosh Omanut at Ramah Day Camp of Greater Washington
This summer I had the amazing opportunity to work at the new Ramah Day Camp of Greater Washington. I was able to blend my passion for art with my passion for Judaism, running all the art programs and teaching kids about Judaism through art. It was also my first time supervising other staff members, which I really enjoyed.
