    A land deal between the US (Thomas Jefferson) and France (Napoleon). The deal resulted in the US acquiring 827,000 square miles of land West of the Mississippi River for 15 Million dollars. Thomas Jefferson bought the land because the US wanted the port of New Orleans and believed that Napoleon might would withdraw his offer at any time.

    Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Lewis and Clark were sent to explore the lands of the LA Purchase. The purpose of the expedition was to clear the path for westward expansion. Sacagawea was an Indian woman who helped Lewis and Clark achieve the goals of the mission.

  • Webster-Ashburton Treaty

    The Webster-Ashburton Treaty was signed August 9, 1842 and it resolved frictions in Anglo-American relations. It was used to settle a border between the US and Canada.
  • Annexation of Texas

    The incorporation of Texas into the US on December 29, 1845. About 10 years after Texas won its independence from Mexico. Americans moved to Texas and wanted to bring slavery. Mexico outlawed slavery and so, the went to war with Texas.

    War With Mexico

    From 1846-1847, General Zackary Taylor led US forces through Rio Grande, captured Monterrey, Mexico, and fought at the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1847, U.S. forces under General Winfield Scott landed near Vera Cruz. Scott began a siege of Vera Cruz on March 22, the fortress fell on March 27, and on April 8, he moved toward Mexico City. Towards the end of the war General Santa Ana convinced James Polk to allow him back into Mexico and then double crossed him by taking control of the Mexican Army
  • Mexican Cession

    In February 1848, Mexico surrendered lands to the US at the end of the Mexican War. This was due to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which set up what and how lands were surrendered. The land succeeded had not been part of the areas east of Rio Grande.

    Oregon Territory

    An organized incorporated territory of the US from August 14, 1848 to February 14, 1859. In 1844,“54 40 or fight” was the presidential campaign slogan of James Knox Polk. The slogan referred to the latitude that served as the northern border of Oregon. He wanted to convey his intentions to claim Oregon for US or go to war with England.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    The treaty to bring parts of present-day Arizona and New Mexico into the United States and settled the main boundaries of the United States of America.
