Without the Model T, there would have been no school buses or convenient transportation to-and-from school. • Goosebumps

    Goosebumps
The first series of chapter books that I yearned to read were Goosebumps. I craved being scared and with my babysitter by my side, I read these books for one hour a day over the summer. I was all about these books and the spin off TV. show. My family and I still talk about these books and how fascinated I was with them.

  • Boys and Stuff

    Boys and Stuff
I kept a diary in elementary, middle school, and high school. I would write down the boys I was in love with, the cool things my friends and I did, and all of my confusing emotions. Sometimes when I need a good laugh, I pull these diaries out.
  • Oprah's Book Club

    Oprah's Book Club
Like many households in America, the 4:00 weekday hour was mandatory Oprah time. When she would announce her new book club book, my mother was out the next day searching for that title with the official O sticker. I remember my mother setting time aside from her busy life to sit and read. Not knowing how impressionable this was at the time, I now see myself making time to read from my busy life.
  • AOL and Instand Messaging

    AOL and Instand Messaging
AOL and Instant Messaging changed the way I communicated with friends and how I spent my free time. I could have a conversation with multiple friends at once in either one large group or individual groups. Many times I would be IMing with a large party and then having a totally separate conversation with someone else while listing to music and watching TV at the same time. Instant messaging also changed my written language by shorting words and phrases or using pictures. ;)
  • Egypt and Mummies

    Egypt and Mummies
In middle school, I was convinced that I would become an Egyptologist. I spent my money and free time buying as many books as I could on the subject. I was so committed that I wrote my own history of Egypt and conducted experiments of mummification on harmless fruit. At one point, I could name almost every god and read and write a few hieroglyphics.
  • Columbine High School

    Columbine High School
The massacre at Columbine High School shocked the world. Because of this incident, and sadly others like it, schools have had to change protocols and building regulations. Furthermore, a strict no-tolerance policy is in effect in schools. This horrific event also changed how teachers, students, and parents view schools.
  • English Class

    English Class
My 7th and 8th grade English classes were my favorite in school. We spend all day reading wonderful books and having book discussions. The books we read in class are still some of my favorites; The Hobbit, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Sawyer, Animal Farm, The Most Dangerous Game. Reading these books motivated me to read on my own time. I love reading because of these experiences.
  • Movie vs. the Book

    Movie vs. the Book
Over the Christmas break my aunt was going to take me to see Harry Potter. A few years earlier my mother bought me the book, but I had never opened it. For some reason, I was determined to read and finish the book before seeing the movie at the end of the week. I spent a week laying on the couch reading. I was hooked. I now realize the lifelong influence and connections literature can have on a person.

  • Music

    Music
In high school I discovered the band AFI and was entranced by the sounds and lyrics. I started to write my own lyric that merged into poetry. Finding inspiration from the music, like a mentor text, I would scribble down lines to mimic my favorite songwriters. To this day, when I need an outlet to express my voice, I turn to music and poetry.
