  • Plan of an Institute of Technology

Prepared by William Barton Rogers. This plan, for the MIT Institute, proposed a 3 part institution which focused on a Society of Arts, a Museum of Arts, and a School of Industrial Science.
  • MIT awarded Back Bay Property

The Massachusetts legislature awards the Black Bay property lot to MIT. William G Preston designs 3 buildings for the site: The Natural History Society Building and two MIT buildings.
  • First classes of MIT

First classes were held in Boston in the Mercantile Building.
  • Architecture Classes

Nation's first architecture classes are offered at MIT.
  • Physics Laboratory

Professor Edward C Pickering start the first physics laboratory at MIT
  • Back Bay Expansion

The Massachusetts Legislature approves MIT's application for expanding the Back Bay.
  • School of Mechanic Arts

The MIT Corporation establishes a School of Mechanic Arts to teach instruction for Engineers and Machinists.
  • Electrical Engineering Curriculum

Within the Department of Physics, MIT establishes the nation's first electrical engineering curriculum. The Department of Electrical Engineering would be later founded in 1902.
  • Engineering Building and Chemical Engineering

the Engineering Building housed the departments of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. In the same year, MIT became the first University in the nation to offer a four year curriculum on Chemical Engineering, within the Department of Chemistry. Later in 1920 Chemical Engineering became its own department.
  • Enrollment reaches 1000

  • Department of Electrical Engineering is Established

  • Tech Union

The first gathering place of students, the Tech Union, used two rooms above the Mechanical Laboratories building. Later the union grew and expanded in 1908.
  • TX-0 Computer

The transistorized experimental computer 0 is designed, constructed, and operated in the Lincoln Laboratory. It's purpose was to evaluate the use of transistor circuitry and large-scale magnetic-core memory using a high-speed computer. This computer was among the first "almost-all-solid-state" machine.
  • Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an independent program. Later, in 2003, the laboratory of Computer Science and the AI laboratory will merge into one laboratory.
  • Police Car Hack

Students create one of the most famous "hacks". students placed a mock MI Campus Police car on top of the dome. The car was completed with flashing lights, number "pi", pair of fuzzy dice, license number "IHTFP", and a MIT Campus Police parking ticket.
  • CSAIL

The laboratory which is a merge of the Computer Science lab and the Artificial Intelligence laboratory.
